What is Rock Rose? Rock Rose (Cistus incanus) is a wild Mediterranean shrub that has been used in folk medicine for centuries across Greece, Italy, and the broader Mediterranean region. Its leaves and stems are unusually rich in polyphenols — plant compounds that act as potent antioxidants and antimicrobial agents. The plant has attracted growing scientific interest in recent decades, particularly for its effects on the immune system and its ability to neutralize free radicals. How does Rock Rose work? Rock Rose works primarily through its exceptional concentration of polyphenols, which neutralize harmful free radicals and help calm inflammatory signals in the body. Its flavonoids and tannins interfere with the ability of certain viruses and bacteria to latch onto cells, giving it a natural defense-boosting action. Some compounds in Rock Rose also support the body's own antioxidant enzymes, helping cells stay protected during periods of stress or illness. What forms does Rock Rose come in? Herbal tea made from dried Cistus leaves is the most traditional and widely-studied form. Standardized extracts in capsule or tablet form are available for more controlled dosing. Liquid tinctures and alcohol-based extracts preserve a broad spectrum of active compounds. Essential oil derived from the resin (labdanum) is used topically for skin conditions. For immune support, tea or standardized extract is recommended. Where it comes from: Rock Rose has been part of Mediterranean healing traditions for over 2,000 years . Ancient Greek physicians recorded its use for skin wounds, infections, and digestive complaints. In folk medicine across Greece, Turkey, and Italy, Cistus tea was a go-to remedy during cold and flu season. The resinous sap — labdanum — was traded across the ancient world as a fragrance and wound treatment, and is referenced in early Egyptian and biblical texts.

Helps

What does Rock Rose help with? Cold and flu (immune defense): Rock Rose is best known for helping the body fight off colds and flu more quickly. Its polyphenols appear to block viruses from attaching to cells, while also stimulating the immune system's front-line defenses. Recurring infections: People prone to repeated colds, sinus infections, or respiratory bugs may find Rock Rose helpful as a daily preventive during high-risk seasons. Its antimicrobial compounds create a tougher environment for pathogens to take hold. Skin inflammation and wounds: Applied topically or taken as a tea, Rock Rose has a long tradition of soothing inflamed, irritated, or infected skin. Its tannins act as natural astringents that help calm redness and support wound closure. Oxidative stress and cell damage: With one of the highest polyphenol levels recorded in any plant, Rock Rose helps mop up free radicals that cause cellular damage. This makes it useful for anyone exposed to high levels of environmental stress, illness, or physical strain. Sore throat and upper respiratory symptoms: Cistus tea is a traditional sore throat remedy — the warm liquid combined with its astringent, antimicrobial tannins coats and soothes irritated throat tissue while fighting the underlying infection. Gut inflammation and digestive upset: The tannins and polyphenols in Rock Rose have a gentle calming effect on an irritated digestive lining. It has been used traditionally for mild diarrhea, gut cramping, and digestive inflammation. Oral health (gum inflammation): Rock Rose extracts show antimicrobial action against bacteria that cause gum disease and bad breath. Rinsing with Cistus tea or extract may help reduce gum inflammation and oral bacterial load. Seasonal allergies: Quercetin and other flavonoids in Rock Rose help stabilize immune cells involved in allergic reactions, potentially reducing the intensity of seasonal allergy symptoms like sneezing and nasal congestion. Fatigue and low energy during illness: The antioxidant load in Rock Rose helps protect mitochondria — the energy-producing parts of cells — from the oxidative damage that makes you feel drained during illness or periods of high stress.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
