What is Keigairengyoto? Keigairengyoto is a complex, 17-herb Kampo formula that has been used in Japan for centuries to address chronic inflammatory conditions — particularly those affecting the head, face, and upper respiratory tract. It is one of the more widely prescribed Kampo formulas in modern Japanese clinical practice, available as standardized extract granules from manufacturers like Tsumura. The formula blends heat-clearing, blood-moving, and detoxifying herbs into a balanced preparation tailored to a specific constitutional pattern. How does Keigairengyoto work? The formula works through several overlapping actions: its heat-clearing herbs (Forsythia, Gardenia, Phellodendron) help calm inflammatory signaling; blood-moving herbs (Angelica, Cnidium, Peony) improve circulation and reduce tissue congestion; and herbs like Platycodon and Schizonepeta help open and drain the upper respiratory passages. Together, they address the root cause of recurring inflammation rather than just suppressing symptoms. What forms does Keigairengyoto come in? In Japan, Keigairengyoto is most commonly dispensed as standardized hot-water extract granules (e.g., Tsumura TJ-50), which are dissolved in warm water and taken before meals. Traditional boiled decoctions are also used by Kampo practitioners who prefer custom dosing. Capsule or tablet forms are less common but available in some markets. Where it comes from: Keigairengyoto traces its origins to classical Chinese herbal medicine texts and was adopted into the Japanese Kampo tradition, where it has been refined and standardized over several centuries. It is particularly well established in Japanese otolaryngology (ENT) and dermatology practice, where it is frequently prescribed alongside or instead of antibiotics for chronic sinus disease and recurrent skin infections.

Helps

What does Keigairengyoto help with? Chronic sinusitis and nasal congestion: This is Keigairengyoto's best-studied application. The formula helps reduce sinus inflammation, thin mucus, and improve drainage — making it useful for people who experience recurring sinus pressure, post-nasal drip, or congestion that does not fully clear. Japanese ENT specialists frequently prescribe it for chronic rhinosinusitis, sometimes alongside conventional treatments. Acne and inflammatory skin conditions: Keigairengyoto is widely used in Japan for moderate to stubborn acne, especially in people with recurring pimples, redness, or inflammatory breakouts. It is thought to work by reducing internal heat and inflammation while improving circulation to the skin — addressing the underlying imbalance rather than just the surface symptoms. Chronic tonsillitis and sore throat: The formula has a long history of use for recurrent tonsil inflammation, particularly in people who experience repeated bouts of sore throat or tonsillitis. Its heat-clearing and antimicrobial herbs help calm inflamed tonsillar tissue and may reduce the frequency of flare-ups over time. Allergic rhinitis: Some clinical evidence supports Keigairengyoto's use for managing sneezing, nasal itching, and runny nose associated with allergies. It may help modulate the immune response that triggers allergic symptoms, particularly in people whose rhinitis has a strong inflammatory or heat component. Otitis media (ear inflammation): In Japanese pediatric and ENT practice, Keigairengyoto is occasionally used to support resolution of middle ear inflammation, particularly in children with recurrent infections. It may help reduce fluid buildup and chronic ear inflammation when used alongside standard care. Skin conditions with redness and pus: Beyond acne, the formula is used for other pustular or inflamed skin conditions — including folliculitis and certain types of rosacea — where heat, redness, and discharge are prominent. The combination of heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs addresses this pattern well in traditional Kampo reasoning. Recurrent upper respiratory infections: People who catch every cold going around or whose infections linger may benefit from Keigairengyoto's immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties. It is sometimes used between acute episodes to reduce the frequency and severity of recurrent respiratory illness. Eczema and itchy skin: Keigairengyoto is used for certain presentations of eczema, particularly where the skin is red, inflamed, and itchy rather than dry and pale. The blood-nourishing and heat-clearing herbs together help calm the immune-driven inflammation driving the itch-scratch cycle.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
