Straining in the bathroom
You sit down and push, and not much happens. The stool feels hard and dry, and it does not want to move. You may be in there a long time, red in the face, and still feel like you are not done.
Straining often means the stool sat too long inside and went dry. Low fibre, too little water, and sitting still all day can lead to that. Some pills, like iron tablets or strong pain pills, can too.
Pushing hard can leave you sore. It can bring on piles (swollen veins around the back passage) or a small tear. Then you hold back because it hurts, and the next time is harder.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you spot blood, or the stool looks black and tarry. Go the same day for bad belly pain, vomiting, a swollen belly, or no wind at all. Book a visit if you keep losing weight, feel a lump near the back passage, or the straining is new and lasts more than three weeks.
Below is a list of home remedies long used for constipation. Each one has a grade. The grade shows how much research has been done on it, not that it will do anything for you.
