What is Raw Honey? Raw honey is honey that has not been heated above the natural hive temperature (around 35°C / 95°F) and has not been ultra-filtered, meaning its full spectrum of enzymes, pollen, propolis, antioxidants, and antimicrobial compounds remain intact. Commercially processed honey is pasteurized to extend shelf life and improve clarity, but this destroys much of what makes honey medicinally valuable. Raw honey varies significantly by floral source — Manuka honey from New Zealand is the most clinically studied variety due to its exceptionally high methylglyoxal (MGO) content. How does Raw Honey work? Raw honey fights bacteria through multiple mechanisms at once: glucose oxidase converts glucose to hydrogen peroxide (a natural antiseptic), methylglyoxal directly damages bacterial cell walls, and its low pH and high sugar concentration pull moisture away from microbes. Its flavonoids and phenolic acids neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation throughout the body. The fructooligosaccharides in raw honey act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria without feeding harmful strains. What forms does Raw Honey come in? For therapeutic use, raw unfiltered honey or Manuka honey (MGO 250+, UMF 10+) are most effective. For wounds and infections, medical-grade Manuka dressings (Medihoney) are specifically formulated for clinical use. For internal use — sore throats, gut support, antioxidant benefits — any high-quality raw honey from a reputable local or artisan beekeeper works well. Avoid commercially processed honey (the golden clear kind on supermarket shelves) for therapeutic purposes, as it has lost most of its active compounds. Where it comes from: Honey is one of the oldest recorded medicines in human history. Egyptian medical papyri from 2700 BCE list honey in wound dressings. Ayurvedic texts describe honey (Madhu) as a carrier and healer used for over 4,000 years . Ancient Greek, Roman, Islamic (Unani), and Chinese medical traditions all incorporated honey for wounds, digestive complaints, and respiratory conditions. The discovery of hydrogen peroxide production in honey by researchers in the 20th century gave the first modern mechanistic explanation for what healers had observed for millennia.

Helps

What does Raw Honey help with? Wound healing and burns: Raw honey creates a moist, low-oxygen, antimicrobial environment on wounds that speeds healing and reduces scarring. It actively kills bacteria — including antibiotic-resistant strains like MRSA — while reducing inflammation and stimulating new tissue growth. Medical-grade Manuka honey dressings are now approved in several countries as clinical wound-care products. Sore throat and cough: Raw honey coats and soothes the throat, reduces inflammation, and kills bacteria that contribute to throat infections. Studies comparing honey to over-the-counter cough medicines in children have found honey equally or more effective at reducing nighttime cough and improving sleep. A spoonful at bedtime or mixed in warm water is the classic approach. H. pylori infection (stomach ulcers): Raw honey — especially Manuka — has shown activity against H. pylori, the bacterium responsible for most stomach ulcers, in both lab and early clinical settings. It helps soothe the stomach lining and may reduce bacterial load when used alongside conventional treatment, though it is not a standalone cure for active H. pylori infection. Gut health and digestion: The fructooligosaccharides naturally present in raw honey act as prebiotics, selectively feeding beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Regular consumption of small amounts of raw honey can help shift the gut microbiome in a favorable direction and may reduce symptoms of mild digestive discomfort. Skin infections and acne: Applied topically, raw honey draws moisture, kills acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes), and calms red, inflamed skin. Manuka honey in particular has been studied for chronic skin conditions including eczema and rosacea. Many people use it as a simple face mask or spot treatment with good results. Seasonal allergies (local raw honey): The theory is that consuming local raw honey introduces small amounts of local pollen, potentially desensitizing the immune system over time — similar in concept to allergy immunotherapy. The evidence is limited and mixed, but the practice is low-risk, widely used, and anecdotally popular among people with mild seasonal allergies. Sleep and relaxation: A small amount of honey before bed provides a slow-release glucose source that may stabilize blood sugar overnight and support the production of melatonin via the insulin-tryptophan-serotonin pathway. Many people find a teaspoon of honey in herbal tea a gentle, effective part of a wind-down routine. Antioxidant and immune support: Raw honey is genuinely rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids that neutralize free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. Darker varieties like buckwheat honey have particularly high antioxidant content — comparable to some fruits and vegetables. Regular small amounts contribute meaningfully to overall antioxidant intake. Oral health and gum disease: Despite being sweet, raw honey has shown antibacterial effects against oral bacteria including Streptococcus mutans (a cavity-causing bacterium) and species involved in gum disease. Manuka honey chews and rinses have been explored in small studies for reducing plaque and gingival inflammation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
