What is Zinc Carnosine? Zinc carnosine is a synthetic chelate made by bonding zinc to the naturally occurring dipeptide carnosine in a 1:1 ratio. This bonding creates a molecule that is significantly more stable and slow-releasing in the gastrointestinal tract than either zinc or carnosine taken separately. It was originally developed in Japan as a prescription medicine (Polaprezinc) for treating gastric ulcers and is now widely available as a dietary supplement in many countries. How does Zinc Carnosine work? The chelated structure allows zinc carnosine to cling to the mucosal lining of the stomach and intestines, slowly releasing both zinc and carnosine directly where they are needed most. Zinc supports tissue repair and immune activity in the gut wall, while carnosine helps neutralize free radicals and calm inflammatory activity in the lining. Together they help rebuild damaged mucosal tissue, reduce oxidative stress, and create a more resilient gut barrier. What forms does Zinc Carnosine come in? Most commonly available in capsule or tablet form in doses of 75–150 mg per day (providing roughly 16–34 mg elemental zinc). Powder forms exist but are less common. The proprietary trademarked ingredient PepZin GI is widely used in supplement formulations and represents the same zinc-L-carnosine chelate studied in clinical trials. Where it comes from: Zinc carnosine was developed in the late 1980s and approved as a prescription drug in Japan in 1994 under the brand name Promac (active ingredient Polaprezinc) specifically for gastric ulcer treatment. Its success in the Japanese medical system prompted extensive clinical research, and it has since been adopted globally as an over-the-counter supplement for broader gut health support.

Helps

What does Zinc Carnosine help with? Stomach ulcers and gastritis: Zinc carnosine directly adheres to ulcerated tissue in the stomach lining, slowing its own release and giving the mucosal layer time to heal. Clinical research in Japan showed it significantly reduced ulcer size and improved healing rates in patients with confirmed gastric ulcers. H. pylori infection (as adjunct support): While zinc carnosine does not replace antibiotic therapy for H. pylori, research shows it can help suppress H. pylori activity and improve the effectiveness of standard triple-therapy regimens. It also helps repair the stomach damage that H. pylori leaves behind. Leaky gut and intestinal permeability: Zinc plays a key structural role in maintaining the tight junctions that hold gut wall cells together. Zinc carnosine provides zinc locally along the intestinal lining, helping seal gaps that allow undigested particles and bacteria to pass into the bloodstream — a pattern linked to systemic inflammation. NSAID-induced gut damage: Regular use of painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin is a leading cause of stomach lining erosion and ulcers. Studies show zinc carnosine can significantly reduce this damage both preventively and after injury has occurred, making it a practical companion for people who rely on NSAIDs regularly. Acid reflux and GERD symptoms: By strengthening and repairing the mucosal lining of the esophagus and stomach, zinc carnosine can help reduce the sensitivity and irritation that drives acid reflux symptoms. It works on the tissue level rather than suppressing acid production, so it complements rather than replaces acid-reducing approaches. Gut lining repair and recovery: Whether gut damage comes from food intolerances, stress, illness, or medications, zinc carnosine supports regeneration of the protective mucous layer and the epithelial cells underneath it. It promotes the production of heat-shock proteins that help stressed gut cells recover faster. Inflammatory bowel conditions: Early clinical evidence and mechanistic research suggest zinc carnosine may help reduce mucosal inflammation in conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It appears to calm some of the inflammatory signaling that drives flares while supporting the integrity of the gut wall. Chemotherapy-related mouth sores and gut damage: Zinc carnosine has been studied as a supportive treatment during chemotherapy, where it helped reduce the severity of mouth sores (oral mucositis) and intestinal damage caused by treatment. This is one of the stronger clinical applications beyond purely gut-related conditions. Dysgeusia (taste disturbance): In Japan, zinc carnosine (as Polaprezinc) is also used clinically for taste disorders since zinc is essential for normal taste receptor function. Supplementation has been shown to restore taste sensation in people with zinc-related taste disturbances.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
