What is Plumbum metallicum? Plumbum metallicum is a homeopathic single remedy made from metallic lead (Latin name: Plumbum). The lead is ground up, then diluted over and over in water or alcohol, with hard shaking at each step. At the usual 30C strength, essentially none of the original lead is left, so what you take is a sugar pellet or a drop of alcohol and water. Homeopaths choose it for people whose complaints match the old picture of lead poisoning. That picture includes hard dry stools with gripping belly pain, weak or drooping wrists, numb limbs, tremor and slow, foggy thinking. The evidence in one line: it is a long-standing staple of homeopathy, but trials have not shown it does more than a placebo (a dummy pill). Traditional standing and proof of effect are two different things, and that point applies to everything on this page. How does Plumbum metallicum work? There is no accepted way this could work in the body, and that is the honest starting point. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes a set of symptoms in a healthy person is given in tiny amounts to someone with those same symptoms. Lead poisoning causes cramping constipation and weak wrists, so Plumbum is matched to those complaints. The second idea is that repeated dilution with shaking makes a remedy stronger, not weaker. Past about 12C, no molecules of the starting material are expected to remain. Chemistry and physics offer no known mechanism for a liquid to carry an effect once the substance is gone. What forms does Plumbum metallicum come in? Common forms include: - Sugar pellets or pillules, the most usual form - Tablets that melt under the tongue - Liquid dilutions in alcohol and water, given as drops - Combination products that mix several remedies in one bottle Strengths are labelled with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C on the centesimal scale, or 6X and 12X on the decimal scale. A higher number means more dilution steps and less chance that any lead remains. Where it comes from: Lead colic has been described since ancient times, in miners, painters and potters who handled the metal. Samuel Hahnemann and his followers added lead to the homeopathic materia medica in the early 1800s after "provings", in which healthy volunteers took the substance and wrote down what they felt. The resulting symptom picture has been passed down in homeopathic textbooks ever since. It has remained in use across homeopathic practice in Europe and India for about two hundred years.

Helps

What does Plumbum metallicum help with? Constipation with hard, dry stools and cramping pain: This is the best known homeopathic use, and the evidence for it is weak. Textbooks describe stools like small hard balls, with the belly drawn in and pain that pulls toward the back. No published human trial tests Plumbum metallicum for constipation. If you are constipated, fibre, fluids, movement and, if needed, a proven laxative from a pharmacist are the options with real support. Colic (gripping belly pain) that eases with hard pressure: Tradition only. The classic picture is severe cramping that feels better when you press hard on the belly or bend double. Sudden severe belly pain can signal a blockage or another emergency, so it needs a doctor, not a remedy trial at home. Muscle weakness and wasting, especially drooping wrists: Traditional use, with no trial support. Wrist drop is a known sign of real lead poisoning, which is how the remedy picture arose. New weakness in a hand or limb always needs medical assessment, because causes include nerve damage, stroke and vitamin deficiency. Numbness, tingling and nerve pain in the arms and legs: Homeopaths match Plumbum to shooting or burning nerve pain with numbness. There are no human trials of this remedy for nerve pain. Ongoing numbness needs a doctor to look for causes such as diabetes, a trapped nerve or low vitamin B12. Tremor, slow movement, memory trouble and foggy thinking: These appear in the traditional symptom picture and are not supported by trial evidence. New tremor or memory loss should be checked by a doctor, since these can be early signs of conditions that respond to treatment. Recovery after lead exposure: Plumbum metallicum is not a treatment for lead poisoning. Real lead poisoning is diagnosed with a blood test and treated by doctors, sometimes with chelation (medicines that bind metals so the body can pass them out). Using a homeopathic pellet instead of that care is dangerous.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A homeopathic remedy made by diluting metallic lead until, at the usual 30C strength, essentially none of it remains.
  • Main uses: Constipation with hard, dry stools and cramping pain, Colic (gripping belly pain) eased by hard pressure, Muscle weakness with drooping wrists, Numbness and nerve pain in the limbs
  • Best for: People already working with a homeopath who want the traditional symptom match, Use alongside, never instead of, medical care
  • Active ingredients: Elemental lead as the starting material, Lactose or sucrose pellet base, Alcohol and water in liquid forms
  • Forms: Sugar pellets, Tablets, Liquid dilutions in alcohol and water, Combination remedies
  • Time to effect: No reliable time; trials show nothing beyond placebo, so do not wait on it when symptoms are serious.
  • Side effects: Rare at 30C, since the pellet is sugar; the real risks are lost time and low dilutions that still hold lead.

Common forms include: - Sugar pellets or pillules, the most usual form - Tablets that melt under the tongue - Liquid dilutions in alcohol and water, given as drops - Combination products that mix several remedies in one bottle

Strengths are labelled with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C on the centesimal scale, or 6X and 12X on the decimal scale. A higher number means more dilution steps and less chance that any lead remains.

Where it comes from:

Lead colic has been described since ancient times, in miners, painters and potters who handled the metal.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Plumbum metallicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Plumbum metallicum?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because lead crosses to the baby and no lead product has been shown safe or useful at any strength
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or child without a doctor's say-so, since children absorb lead far more easily than adults
  • Do not use if you are buying a dilution below 12C, such as 3X, 6X or 8X, because these can still hold real lead
  • Do not use if you have lead poisoning or a raised blood lead level; that needs a doctor and proper treatment, not a homeopathic pellet
  • Do not use if you work with lead, live with flaking old paint, or have another lead exposure at home
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease, anaemia (a low red blood cell count) or a nerve disorder, unless your doctor has agreed
  • Do not use if you have a seizure disorder (a condition that causes fits) without medical advice
  • Do not use if you would stop, delay or cut back a prescribed medicine in order to take it
  • Do not use if you have severe, sudden or worsening belly pain; get that checked the same day

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you have severe or sudden belly pain, if you cannot pass stool or wind, or if you vomit and cannot keep fluids down.

Get urgent care for new weakness in a hand, arm or leg, for a drooping wrist, or for confusion, slurred speech or a fit (seizure).

Ask your doctor for a blood lead test if you or your child may have swallowed or breathed in lead, or if a child has been eating paint chips or soil. Call emergency services if a child swallows a lead object or shows fits, vomiting or extreme drowsiness.

Also book a routine appointment if your constipation, numbness, tremor or memory trouble has not settled within two weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
