Helleborus niger

Traditional tier T2, a long-standing homeopathic remedy; evidence grade insufficient, with no trial showing benefit beyond placebo.

Home

What is Helleborus niger? Helleborus niger is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the Christmas rose, also called black hellebore. Homeopaths give it to people who seem dull, slow and switched off. It is a single homeopathic drug, not a herbal extract. The plant is soaked, then watered down again and again. At 30C there is no measurable plant left in the pill. The short verdict: trials do not show that it works better than a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in a tradition is not proof that something works. This page keeps the two apart, and it says so once, here. How does Helleborus niger work? There is no known way for a 30C pill to act on the body. Homeopathy works on an idea, not on a drug dose. The idea is that a tiny trace of a substance can ease the same signs it would cause in a big dose. Makers water the plant down step by step and shake it at each step. By 30C, no measurable plant matter is left. So the pill has nothing in it that can act. Any change a person feels may come from time, rest, care and hope. What forms does Helleborus niger come in? Most shops sell small sugar pills marked 6C, 30C or 200C. Liquid drops in alcohol are also sold. Some makers sell low strengths such as 1X, 3X or a mother tincture. These can hold real plant matter and are not safe to take on your own. Buy only from a known maker with a clear label. The label should show the strength. If it does not, do not take it. Where it comes from: Black hellebore grows wild in the mountains of Europe. Greek and Roman doctors used the root for madness and for body swelling. It was harsh, and it killed people. Homeopathy took the plant up in the 1800s. Homeopaths listed it for dull, slow, quiet states of mind. It has stayed in homeopathic books ever since.

Helps

What does Helleborus niger help with? Dull, slow, switched-off states after an illness: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy. Old books describe a person who stares, answers slowly and seems far away. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. The claim rests on homeopathic teaching alone. Slow thinking and low mood: Homeopaths may pick this remedy when a low mood comes with slow, heavy thinking. That is a traditional match, not a tested one. No trial supports it. Low mood that lasts, or thoughts of self-harm, needs a doctor, not a pill from a shelf. Slow recovery after a knock to the head: Homeopathic books list the remedy for a dazed, slow state after a head injury. There is no trial evidence for this at all. A head injury can turn serious fast. Get medical help first. Do not use this remedy in place of that check. Quiet, listless children after a fever: Some homeopaths use it for a child who is very quiet and flat after a fever. This is tradition only. No trial has tested it in children. A child who is very drowsy, will not drink, or is hard to wake needs urgent care. Body swelling from held fluid (old books called this dropsy): This use comes from old plant medicine, not from modern work. The raw plant acts on the heart and the kidneys, which is why old doctors tried it. That is also why it poisoned people. Swelling in the legs or belly can point to heart or kidney trouble. See a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Black hellebore grows wild in the mountains of Europe. Greek and Roman doctors used the root for madness and for body swelling. It was harsh, and it killed people.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Helleborus niger need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Helleborus niger?

  • Do not use if you are dealing with a head injury, a fit (seizure), sudden confusion or a person who is hard to wake — call for emergency help instead
  • Do not use if you would delay, skip or stop a medicine your doctor has given you
  • Do not use if you have been offered the raw plant, the mother tincture, or a low strength such as 1X or 3X — these hold heart poisons and can kill
  • Do not use if you have a heart rhythm problem (an uneven heart beat) or take digoxin, unless your doctor says it is fine
  • Do not use if you take a water pill (a tablet that makes you pass more urine) or steroid tablets, without asking your doctor first
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has agreed
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you cannot handle lactose (milk sugar) and the pills are made with it
  • Do not use if you must avoid alcohol and the product comes as drops

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help now if a person is very drowsy, hard to wake, confused, fitting, or has an uneven or very slow heart beat. Do the same if anyone has eaten any part of the plant. Book a doctor's visit if low mood, swelling in the legs or belly, or slow thinking lasts more than a few days, or if a child stays flat and quiet after a fever.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
