Phosphoricum acidum

A long-standing staple of homeopathy (T2), but the evidence grade is insufficient: trials do not separate it from a dummy pill.

Home

What is Phosphoricum acidum? Phosphoricum acidum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from phosphoric acid, a clear, sour liquid. Homeopaths give it to people who feel drained in mind and body, often after grief, worry, or an illness. It is made by diluting the acid again and again, with shaking at each step. At the common 30C strength, none of the starting acid is left. What you take is water, alcohol, or a sugar pellet that carried the dilution. Here is the evidence in one line. Homeopaths have used it for over 150 years , but trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that something works. How does Phosphoricum acidum work? There is no accepted way this could work in the body. At 30C the dose holds no measurable phosphoric acid at all. Homeopaths work from an idea called "like cures like". They say a substance that causes certain complaints in a well person can, once diluted, help a sick person with those same complaints. They also say the shaking step leaves an imprint in the liquid. That idea has not been shown to hold up in the lab or in people. Any change you notice is best explained by time, care, attention, or the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Phosphoricum acidum come in? Sugar pellets are the most common form. They are meant to melt under the tongue. You may also see liquid drops in alcohol, tablets, or a mother tincture (the plain, barely diluted starting liquid). Strengths are written as 6C, 30C, 200C and so on. A higher number means more dilution steps, so less of the starting acid, not more. Where it comes from: Homeopathy began in Germany in the late 1700s with Samuel Hahnemann. Phosphoric acid was tested on healthy volunteers in the 1800s and written up by Hering and other early homeopaths. Since then it has kept a fixed place in homeopathic books. It is the classic entry for a person who feels flat and worn out after loss, long study, or a draining illness. That is a record of use, not a record of proof.

Helps

What does Phosphoricum acidum help with? Feeling drained after grief or bad news: This is the best known homeopathic use for the remedy. Books describe a person who is quiet, flat, and too tired to talk. No human trial has tested it for grief, so this rests on tradition alone. Mental tiredness from long study or work: Homeopaths pick it for students and workers whose thinking feels slow and foggy. There is no trial evidence to support this. Sleep, breaks and a check for other causes matter more. Weakness while getting over an illness: Tradition uses it during a slow recovery, when strength is slow to return. No published human trial has looked at this. Tell your doctor if your strength does not come back. Trouble concentrating: Homeopathic texts describe poor focus and a blank feeling. No trial supports this use. Lasting focus problems need a proper check for causes such as poor sleep, low mood, or anaemia (low iron in the blood). Headache in students: Older books list headache that comes on after study or strain. This is traditional description, not tested effect. A new, bad, or frequent headache should be seen by a doctor. Hair loss after a period of stress or illness: Some homeopaths use it for hair that thins after a stressful stretch. There is no trial evidence here. Hair loss has many medical causes worth checking. Loose stools without pain: Tradition describes painless, watery stools in a worn out person. No trial has tested this. Loose stools that last more than a few days, or come with blood, need medical care.

Homeopaths have used it for over 150 years, but trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill.

Where it comes from:

Homeopathy began in Germany in the late 1700s with Samuel Hahnemann.

Who should avoid Phosphoricum acidum?

  • Do not use if you are looking at plain, undiluted phosphoric acid or a lab-grade acid: never swallow it, because it burns the mouth, throat and gut
  • Do not use if you have been told to take a prescribed medicine and you plan to stop it or swap it for this
  • Do not use if you or your child has a serious or fast-worsening problem, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, a bad head injury, or signs of an infection spreading
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is a liquid that holds alcohol
  • Do not use if you are recovering from alcohol dependence and the product is a liquid that holds alcohol
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without asking a doctor first
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you feel worn out for more than two weeks, or if you feel worse at any point.

Get checked soon if you have lost weight without trying, if you have a fever, if you bruise or bleed easily, if you feel short of breath, or if you have lost interest in everything and feel hopeless.

Get emergency help if you or a child swallows concentrated phosphoric acid. Signs include burning pain in the mouth or chest, drooling, and trouble swallowing or breathing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
