What is Helonias dioica? Helonias dioica is a single remedy used in homeopathy. It is made from the root of false unicorn root. The plant's Latin name is Chamaelirium luteum. Homeopaths give it to women who feel drained, low and achy. It is also used for an itchy or burning feeling in the vagina. Some give it for a dull ache in the low back. The root is serially diluted. That means it is watered down step by step, many times over. At 30C, no plant matter is left in the pill, and trials do not tell it apart from a dummy pill. Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. Both things can be true: the remedy is old and well known, and the proof is still missing. How does Helonias dioica work? There is no known way for a 30C pill to act on the body. It holds no plant at all. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is that a tiny dose of something that causes a symptom can ease that same symptom. The second is that shaking each dilution makes it act more strongly. Chemistry does not support the second idea. Once the root is watered down past about 12C, not one molecule of it is left. What is left is water, sugar or alcohol. So any relief people feel is best put down to placebo (a dummy treatment), time, rest, and the care of the person treating them. That does not mean people feel nothing. It means the pill is not the cause. The mother tincture and very low strengths are a different story. They still hold real plant matter, so they can act on the body the way any herb can. What forms does Helonias dioica come in? The remedy comes as small sugar pellets, tablets, or liquid drops. Pellets are the most common form sold over the counter. You may see strengths written as 3X, 6X, 6C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more the root has been watered down. The mother tincture is sold too, often marked Q or 1X. It is the only form that holds a real dose of the plant. Treat it as a herb, not as a sugar pill. Where it comes from: False unicorn root grows in the woods of the eastern United States. Native American healers used the root, and later herbalists used it for women's complaints. American homeopaths took it up in the 1800s. Dr Edwin Hale wrote it up as a remedy for tired, low-spirited women. It has stayed in homeopathic books ever since. The wild plant is now scarce. Digging it up has left it at risk in many states.

Helps

What does Helonias dioica help with? Tiredness and low mood in women: This is the classic reason homeopaths pick Helonias. The books describe a woman who is worn out, sad, and feels better when she keeps busy. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Lasting tiredness has many causes, and some need tests, so see your doctor first. Itching or burning in the vagina: Homeopathic books list this as a leading sign for the remedy. There is no trial evidence behind it. Itching and discharge can come from thrush, an infection, or low hormone levels after menopause. These need a proper check, since each is treated in a different way. Dull ache in the low back: Old homeopathic notes describe a heavy, aching back that feels better with movement. No human study has looked at this use. Back pain that wakes you at night, or comes with numbness, needs a doctor. A dragging, heavy feeling in the pelvis: Homeopaths link this feeling to Helonias, and older herbalists used the root the same way. Neither use has been tested in people. A heavy or bearing-down feeling can mean prolapse (when an organ slips down) or a growth, so get it checked. Periods that are heavy or come at odd times: Traditional homeopathic books list this use, and the root was once called a uterine tonic. There is no trial support. Heavy bleeding can lead to anaemia (low iron in the blood), which needs a blood test and real treatment.

Where it comes from:

False unicorn root grows in the woods of the eastern United States.

Who should avoid Helonias dioica?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, and do not take the mother tincture or any low strength such as 1X or 3X while pregnant, as these hold real plant matter that has never been tested for safety in pregnancy
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Do not use if you are allergic to false unicorn root or to other plants in the lily family
  • Do not use if you have vaginal bleeding that a doctor has not looked at yet
  • Do not use if you would be delaying a test, scan or treatment your doctor has advised
  • Do not use if you are thinking of stopping a prescribed drug to make room for it
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use the mother tincture on your own; it is a herb dose, not a sugar pill

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you feel worn out for more than two weeks, or if tiredness stops you doing normal things. Get checked for heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, or any bleeding after menopause.

Book an appointment for vaginal itching, burning or discharge that does not clear up. These have several causes, and each is treated in a different way.

Get urgent help for bad belly or pelvic pain, a fever, fainting, or a heavy bleed that soaks a pad in an hour. Stop the remedy and call a doctor if you get a rash, swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
