Latrodectus mactans

Recognised but minor use within homeopathy (T1); evidence grade insufficient, with nothing showing it beats placebo.

What is Latrodectus mactans? Latrodectus mactans is a homeopathic remedy made from the black widow spider. Homeopaths have given it for sharp chest pain that spreads down the arm. It comes as sugar pills, granules or liquid drops. It is made by serial dilution: the starting material is watered down again and again, with shaking at each step. At the usual 30C strength, no measurable trace of the spider is left. What you take is sugar, or alcohol and water. Trials have not told this remedy apart from a placebo (a dummy pill with no medicine in it). Long use in homeopathy is a record of custom, not proof that it acts in the body. Chest pain can mean a heart attack, so do not treat it at home. How does Latrodectus mactans work? No one has shown a way this remedy could act in the body. Homeopathy rests on an old idea called like cures like. A thing that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease the same symptoms in a sick person. A real black widow bite causes gripping chest and belly pain, so the diluted spider is given for pain that feels like that. The next step is the problem. The material is watered down so far that none of it is left. Homeopaths say the water keeps a trace of the original, but chemistry and physics do not support that idea. What forms does Latrodectus mactans come in? You will see it as small sugar pills, tiny granules, or liquid drops in alcohol and water. Strengths are written as a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The bigger the number, the more it has been watered down. 30C is the strength most often sold in shops. Low strengths and mother tinctures are not shop products and are not for home use. Sugar pills usually contain lactose (milk sugar). Drops usually contain alcohol. Where it comes from: The remedy entered homeopathic practice in the United States in the late 1800s. Homeopaths gave the watered-down spider to healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those notes became the symptom picture still used today. It has always been a small, rarely used remedy. Its name in homeopathic books is tied mainly to chest pain.

Helps

What does Latrodectus mactans help with? Chest pain that spreads into the left arm: This is the main use named in homeopathic books. No human trial has tested the remedy for it. This pattern of pain can be angina (chest pain from a narrowed heart artery) or a heart attack, so it needs a doctor, not a home remedy. A gripping or vice-like feeling across the chest: Homeopaths match this feeling to the cramping pain of a real spider bite. The match is based on old symptom notes, not on testing in people. Get any new chest tightness checked the same day. Fear and restlessness that comes with chest pain: Old notes describe a person who is scared, cannot keep still and feels they may die. No study has measured whether the remedy changes this. Panic and heart problems can feel the same, and only a doctor can tell them apart. Muscle cramps and stiffness: Cramping is part of the remedy picture because real venom causes strong muscle spasm. There is no trial evidence for cramp relief. Simple causes such as low fluids or a side effect of a medicine are worth checking first. Pain that feels worse on taking a deep breath: Traditional books list this as a guiding sign for the remedy. No human study supports it. Pain on breathing in can come from the lungs or a blood clot, so it should be looked at by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

The remedy entered homeopathic practice in the United States in the late 1800s. Homeopaths gave the watered-down spider to healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those notes became the symptom picture still used today.

It has always been a small, rarely used remedy. Its name in homeopathic books is tied mainly to chest pain.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Latrodectus mactans need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Latrodectus mactans?

  • Do not use if you have chest pain that is new, severe, spreading or coming with sweating, sickness or breathlessness — call emergency services straight away
  • Do not use if you think you may be having a heart attack; this remedy is not treatment for one
  • Do not use if you are being treated for angina (chest pain from a narrowed heart artery) or heart failure and are thinking of cutting down your medicine
  • Do not use if you take any prescribed medicine and would stop or delay it in order to try this
  • Do not use if you have been bitten by a black widow spider, as a bite needs hospital care
  • Do not use if you are offered a mother tincture (the first, undiluted liquid) or a very low strength such as 3X, because real spider material may still be present
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor knows and agrees, since there is no safety data
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or child without asking a doctor first
  • Do not use if you cannot have alcohol and the product is alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar) and the pills contain it

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if you have chest pain that lasts more than a few minutes, spreads to your arm, neck or jaw, or comes with cold sweat, sickness or trouble breathing. Do the same if someone has collapsed or cannot speak properly.

See a doctor within a day if you get chest tightness on walking or climbing stairs, or if you feel your heart racing or skipping.

Go to hospital after any spider bite that brings cramping pain, heavy sweating, a rigid belly or a rapid heartbeat.

See a doctor if cramps, pain or breathlessness keep coming back, or if any symptom you were treating at home is getting worse.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
