What is Lentinan (Shiitake fraction)? Lentinan is a highly purified beta-glucan polysaccharide isolated from the fruiting body of the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes). It has been an approved adjunctive cancer therapy in Japan since the 1980s and is one of the most studied mushroom-derived immune compounds in the world. Unlike whole shiitake extract, lentinan refers specifically to this isolated polysaccharide fraction, which is the primary driver of the mushroom's immune-modulating effects. How does Lentinan (Shiitake fraction) work? Lentinan works by activating key immune cells — including natural killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and T-cells — that are central to the body's defense against tumors and infections. It binds to immune receptors on white blood cells, essentially priming the immune system to be more responsive and coordinated. It doesn't attack cancer directly; instead, it helps your own immune system do its job more effectively, particularly when used alongside conventional treatments. What forms does Lentinan (Shiitake fraction) come in? In clinical oncology settings in Japan, lentinan is administered intravenously or intramuscularly, allowing the intact polysaccharide to enter circulation directly. Oral forms are increasingly popular for immune support but have lower bioavailability due to digestive breakdown of the polysaccharide chain. Whole shiitake mushroom powder and standardized extracts (often standardized to beta-glucan content) fall somewhere in between and are the most widely available consumer options. Where it comes from: Shiitake mushrooms have been used in Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine for over a thousand years, prized for promoting longevity, vitality, and resistance to illness. The isolation and study of lentinan began in the 1970s by Japanese researcher Goro Chihara, who demonstrated its anti-tumor effects. Japan's Ministry of Health approved lentinan as an adjunctive therapy for gastric cancer in 1985 — one of the first government approvals of a mushroom-derived compound for cancer care anywhere in the world.

Helps

What does Lentinan (Shiitake fraction) help with? Cancer treatment support (adjunct therapy): Lentinan is most recognized for extending survival time in gastric and colorectal cancer patients when added to standard chemotherapy. It doesn't replace chemo — it works alongside it, helping the immune system stay active and responsive during treatment. Chemotherapy side effects: Patients using lentinan alongside chemotherapy tend to report less severe nausea, fatigue, and immune suppression compared to chemo alone. It appears to help protect white blood cell counts, which are commonly depleted during cancer treatment. Weak immune system: Lentinan directly activates macrophages, T-cells, and natural killer cells — the frontline soldiers of your immune system. People with chronically low immune activity, whether from illness, stress, or age, may see measurable improvement in immune cell counts and function. Stomach (gastric) cancer: This is lentinan's most clinically validated use. Multiple Japanese clinical trials found improved survival outcomes in gastric cancer patients receiving lentinan plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone. It's the reason Japan approved it as a legitimate adjunct oncology drug. Colorectal cancer support: Clinical research has extended lentinan's use to colorectal cancer, where it similarly helps improve immune response and has been associated with better quality-of-life outcomes during treatment. Frequent infections: By broadly priming the innate immune system, regular lentinan supplementation may help people who catch infections often — whether colds, flu, or recurrent bacterial issues — stay more resilient over time. Low natural killer cell activity: NK cells are your body's rapid-response units against viruses and early tumor cells. Lentinan consistently raises NK cell activity in clinical studies, making it useful for anyone with documented low NK function. HIV/immune-compromised conditions: Early studies explored lentinan in HIV patients, where it showed some ability to slow the decline of CD4+ T-cell counts and support overall immune resilience, though it is not a replacement for antiretroviral therapy. Fatigue from illness or treatment: Cancer patients and people recovering from serious illness often use lentinan to help restore energy and vitality. Improved immune coordination and reduced inflammatory burden likely contribute to this effect.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
