What is He Shou Wu? He Shou Wu (literally 'black-haired Mr. He') is a climbing vine root that has been central to Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,000 years . It comes in two forms: raw (Sheng) and processed/prepared (Zhi), with the processed version being far safer for internal use. The processed root is made by steaming the raw root with black soybean juice, which significantly reduces its toxic anthraquinone content while concentrating its beneficial compounds. How does He Shou Wu work? He Shou Wu's primary active compound, THSG, acts as a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress — a key driver of aging, hair graying, and cognitive decline. It also gently supports liver and kidney function in the TCM framework, which are considered the root systems behind hair vitality and longevity. Some of its compounds interact with pathways that regulate inflammation and cellular energy production. What forms does He Shou Wu come in? Always choose the processed (Zhi He Shou Wu) form for internal supplementation — the raw root carries a much higher risk of liver toxicity and should only be used under practitioner supervision. Standardized extracts (often standardized to THSG content) provide more consistent dosing than raw powder. Traditional decoctions combined with other TCM herbs remain common in clinical TCM practice. Where it comes from: The name comes from a Tang Dynasty legend about a man named He Tianchi who consumed this root and regained his black hair, youthful vigor, and went on to live past 130 years . The herb has been a fixture in longevity formulas throughout Chinese medical history, appearing in foundational texts like the 'Compendium of Materia Medica' (Ben Cao Gang Mu, 1578). It remains one of the most widely used herbs in traditional Chinese, Taiwanese, and diaspora Chinese medicine today.

What does He Shou Wu help with? Hair thinning and premature graying: He Shou Wu is perhaps most famous for its use in supporting hair pigmentation and scalp health. Its antioxidant compounds help protect melanocytes — the cells that produce hair color — from oxidative damage that causes graying. Some evidence also suggests it may support hair follicle activity, potentially slowing thinning. Low energy and fatigue: In TCM, He Shou Wu is classified as a tonic for the liver and kidneys — organ systems associated with stored vitality and physical stamina. Its antioxidant and adaptogen-like properties may help improve cellular energy and reduce the physical effects of chronic stress and depletion. Poor sleep and insomnia: He Shou Wu is often included in TCM formulas for calming the nervous system and improving sleep quality, particularly the kind of insomnia associated with blood deficiency or overthinking in TCM. Some of its compounds may interact with serotonin pathways involved in sleep regulation. Cognitive decline and memory issues: THSG has been studied for its ability to protect brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation — both contributors to cognitive aging. Early research suggests it may support memory and mental clarity, particularly in age-related decline, though human evidence is still emerging. High cholesterol: Several studies have looked at He Shou Wu's ability to help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides while supporting healthy HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Its stilbene compounds are thought to influence fat metabolism and reduce lipid oxidation in blood vessels. Weak immune system: He Shou Wu contains polysaccharides and antioxidant compounds that may support immune cell function and help the body maintain a balanced immune response. It is frequently used in TCM formulas designed to build resilience over time. Constipation (mild): The raw root has natural laxative properties due to its anthraquinone content, and even processed forms retain mild bowel-supporting effects. It is traditionally used for occasional constipation, especially in older adults, though it should not be the first-line approach given its safety profile. Signs of aging and oxidative stress: He Shou Wu's rich antioxidant profile — particularly its THSG and stilbene compounds — helps neutralize free radicals that accelerate cellular aging. It has been used for centuries as a longevity tonic, and modern research is beginning to explore its effects on cellular aging markers. Stress and anxiety: He Shou Wu is traditionally used as a calming tonic for people who feel depleted, overstimulated, or mentally overworked. Its neuroprotective compounds may help buffer the brain against stress-related damage, and it is often combined with other calming herbs in TCM formulas.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
