This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that comes in two main forms: preformed vitamin A (retinol and its esters) found ready-to-use in animal products, and provitamin A carotenoids (like beta-carotene) found in colorful plant foods that your body converts as needed. It's stored in the liver and released gradually, which means it can accumulate if you take too much in supplement form. It plays a foundational role in keeping your eyes, immune system, and skin working properly.
Vitamin A works by binding to receptors in cells that control which genes get switched on or off — essentially acting as a master regulator for growth, development, and immune response. In the eyes, it forms a light-sensing pigment called rhodopsin that lets you see in low light. In the skin and immune system, it keeps surface cells healthy and helps your body churn out white blood cells that fight infection.
Preformed vitamin A supplements (retinol, retinyl palmitate) are highly absorbable but carry a toxicity risk at high doses. Beta-carotene supplements are gentler — they convert slowly and don't cause toxicity, though they can turn skin slightly orange at very high intakes. Topical retinol and retinoic acid (prescription) are used directly on skin for acne and anti-aging. Cod liver oil is a traditional whole-food source with naturally occurring vitamin A plus vitamin D.
Vitamin A was the first fat-soluble vitamin identified, formally isolated in 1913 by researchers McCollum and Davis. But humans have known for over 3,000 years that eating liver could cure night blindness — ancient Egyptian physicians prescribed liver as a remedy. Cod liver oil became a staple in 19th-century European medicine for preventing rickets and boosting children's immunity. Its role in child survival in low-income countries has made vitamin A supplementation one of the most cost-effective public health interventions ever documented.
