What is Kutajarishta? Kutajarishta is a classical Ayurvedic fermented liquid medicine prepared by combining herbal decoctions with sugars and allowing natural fermentation to occur over weeks. The result is a self-preserving tonic with a low natural alcohol content (typically 5–10% ) that also acts as a carrier to enhance absorption of the active compounds. The foundation ingredient is Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica), a tree whose bark and seeds have been used in South Asian medicine for over 2,000 years specifically for bowel disorders. How does Kutajarishta work? Kutaja's primary alkaloids — especially conessine — work against intestinal pathogens including amoeba and bacteria, making it effective for infectious diarrhea and dysentery. The tannins in the formula help tighten the gut lining, reduce excessive fluid secretion, and calm intestinal inflammation. Supporting herbs like Musta and Bilva add antispasmodic and carminative effects, helping ease cramping and bloating alongside the antimicrobial action. What forms does Kutajarishta come in? The traditional liquid arishta form is considered most effective because fermentation enhances potency and the natural alcohol carries fat-soluble alkaloids more efficiently. Tablet and capsule forms are available for those who prefer to avoid alcohol or need portability, though some practitioners feel the fermented liquid delivers faster, stronger results for acute gut infections. Where it comes from: Kutajarishta appears in ancient Ayurvedic texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam and Charaka Samhita, where Kutaja is described as the premier herb for 'Atisara' (diarrhea) and 'Pravahika' (dysentery). It has remained a frontline gut remedy in South Asian traditional medicine for over two millennia and continues to be widely manufactured and prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners today.

Helps

What does Kutajarishta help with? Chronic diarrhea and loose stools: Kutajarishta is arguably the most targeted Ayurvedic formula for persistent loose stools. The tannins help firm up gut secretions and reduce excessive water loss, while the alkaloids address any underlying infection driving the problem. Most people notice improvement within a few days of consistent use. Dysentery (including amoebic): The conessine alkaloid in Kutaja has genuine activity against Entamoeba histolytica, the microorganism responsible for amoebic dysentery. Historically this was Kutaja's most valued application — it was essentially the Ayurvedic equivalent of a targeted anti-parasitic for gut infections. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): For people with IBS-D (diarrhea-predominant IBS), Kutajarishta's combination of antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and gut-toning effects can reduce frequency of episodes and ease cramping. It works best when the IBS has an underlying inflammatory or infectious component. Digestive infections and gut inflammation: Several herbs in the formula — particularly Kutaja bark, Musta, and Bilva — have documented activity against common gut pathogens. The formula also helps calm the intestinal lining inflammation that follows infection, helping the gut recover faster. Colitis and inflammatory bowel symptoms: Kutajarishta is traditionally used for ulcerative colitis-like presentations in Ayurveda, where it helps reduce inflammation in the colon lining, decrease mucus discharge, and firm up loose stools. It's typically used alongside dietary modifications and other gut-healing herbs for best results. Bloating and abdominal cramping: The carminative herbs in the formula — especially Musta and the fermentation byproducts — help release trapped gas and reduce intestinal spasms. Many people experience noticeable relief from post-meal bloating and cramping with regular use. Malabsorption and nutritional deficiency from gut issues: When chronic diarrhea or gut inflammation impairs nutrient absorption, Kutajarishta helps by restoring gut lining integrity and reducing ongoing inflammation. As the gut heals, nutritional uptake improves — though it works best paired with a nutrient-dense diet. Mucus in stool: Mucus in the stool is a classic sign of intestinal inflammation or infection, and Kutajarishta is specifically indicated in Ayurvedic medicine for this presentation. The astringent and anti-inflammatory actions work together to reduce excessive mucus secretion from the gut lining. Worm infestations and intestinal parasites: Traditional Ayurvedic use and some preliminary research suggest Kutaja has antiparasitic properties beyond just amoeba. It's often included in formulas targeting intestinal worms, though it typically works alongside dedicated antiparasitic herbs for best effect. General digestive weakness and poor appetite: The combination of bitter alkaloids and digestive-stimulating herbs in Kutajarishta acts as a digestive tonic — improving bile flow, stimulating appetite, and strengthening overall gut function when taken consistently over a few weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
