What is SIBO Support Protocol? SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) occurs when bacteria that normally live in the large intestine migrate upward and colonize the small intestine in abnormally high numbers. This causes the small intestine to ferment food prematurely, producing gas and triggering bloating, pain, diarrhea, constipation, and nutrient malabsorption. A SIBO Support Protocol combines herbal antimicrobials, gut-motility enhancers, and microbiome-restoring agents to clear the overgrowth and restore normal digestive function. How does SIBO Support Protocol work? The core strategy is two-phase: first, reduce the bacterial load using herbal compounds with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity; second, restore healthy gut movement (motility) so bacteria cannot re-accumulate. Herbs like berberine, allicin, and oregano oil disrupt bacterial cell walls and biofilms, while prokinetic agents like ginger keep food and microbes moving through the gut at the right pace. Prebiotic fibers such as PHGG feed beneficial bacteria in the colon without fueling overgrowth in the small intestine. What forms does SIBO Support Protocol come in? Herbal antimicrobials are taken as capsules or softgels, often enteric-coated to survive stomach acid and reach the small intestine. PHGG comes as a tasteless powder mixed into water. Elemental formulas (semi-digested amino acid-based meal replacements) are used in severe cases to starve bacteria while maintaining nutrition. Prokinetics are typically capsules taken between meals. Where it comes from: Interest in SIBO as a distinct clinical entity grew through the late 1990s and 2000s as breath-testing technology became more accessible. Naturopathic and integrative medicine practitioners developed herbal protocols in the early 2000s as an alternative to rifaximin (the standard antibiotic treatment), driven by research showing comparable efficacy with fewer resistance concerns. The herbal approach draws on centuries of individual botanical use — garlic as an antimicrobial dates back to ancient Egypt and traditional Chinese medicine — now reframed around a modern clinical diagnosis.

Helps

What does SIBO Support Protocol help with? Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO): Herbal antimicrobials directly target the excess bacteria colonizing the small intestine. Research shows that a combination of herbs like berberine, oregano oil, and allicin can reduce bacterial counts as effectively as prescription antibiotics in some patients, with breath-test normalization used as the measurable outcome. Bloating and gas after eating: Bloating in SIBO happens because bacteria ferment carbohydrates too early — in the small intestine instead of the colon. Clearing the overgrowth with herbal antimicrobials dramatically reduces this premature fermentation, often producing noticeable relief within the first 2–3 weeks of treatment. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome): A significant portion of IBS diagnoses — estimates range widely — have an underlying SIBO component. Treating the bacterial overgrowth can resolve IBS symptoms that haven't responded to standard dietary changes alone, particularly the diarrhea-predominant and mixed subtypes. Chronic diarrhea or loose stools: Hydrogen-producing bacteria in the small intestine speed up gut transit and cause watery stools. Reducing the bacterial load slows this process down and helps normalize stool consistency, especially when combined with motility-regulating herbs like ginger. Constipation and slow gut motility: Methane-producing organisms (technically archaea) in the gut are strongly linked to constipation because methane gas slows intestinal movement. Targeting these organisms with allicin-based protocols and supporting gut motility with prokinetics can help restore regular bowel patterns. Nutrient malabsorption: Bacterial overgrowth damages the intestinal lining and competes for nutrients, leading to deficiencies in B12, fat-soluble vitamins, and iron. Clearing the overgrowth allows the gut lining to recover and nutrients to be absorbed normally again. Brain fog linked to gut issues: Many SIBO patients report cognitive cloudiness, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue that improves alongside gut symptoms. This is thought to reflect the gut-brain connection — bacterial metabolites and inflammatory signals produced by the overgrowth appear to affect mental clarity. Rosacea and skin issues tied to gut health: Studies have found a meaningful overlap between SIBO and rosacea, with some patients seeing significant skin improvement after SIBO treatment. The gut-skin axis suggests that systemic inflammation from gut bacterial imbalance can manifest on the skin. Food intolerances (especially carbs): The low-FODMAP diet is often used alongside SIBO treatment because fermentable carbohydrates feed the bacteria causing symptoms. While the diet doesn't cure SIBO, it reduces the fuel source for overgrowth and makes the antimicrobial protocol more comfortable to tolerate. Abdominal pain and cramping: Gas pressure from premature fermentation and inflammation caused by bacterial toxins both contribute to SIBO-related pain. As bacterial counts drop during treatment, most patients notice a gradual but clear reduction in cramping and discomfort.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
