What is Gui Pi Wan? Gui Pi Wan is one of the most celebrated formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine, first recorded in the 13th century text 'Jisheng Fang' and later expanded to 12 herbs in the Ming dynasty. Its name translates roughly to 'Restore the Spleen Pill,' reflecting its core purpose: rebuilding the body's ability to produce and circulate blood and vital energy. Today it remains one of the most widely sold Chinese herbal formulas worldwide, used for conditions the TCM system describes as Heart and Spleen Deficiency. How does Gui Pi Wan work? The formula works on two main systems simultaneously — the digestive system (Spleen in TCM) and the heart/nervous system. Energy-building herbs like Astragalus and Codonopsis help the body convert food into usable energy and blood, while calming herbs like Sour Jujube Seed and Polygala support the nervous system to ease anxiety and improve sleep. Together, this combination addresses the root cause of many fatigue, mood, and menstrual complaints: the body simply not producing or circulating enough nourishing blood and energy. What forms does Gui Pi Wan come in? Traditional honey-bound pills (wan) are the classic form and remain widely available — they dissolve slowly and are gentle on digestion. Concentrated granules and capsules are more convenient and offer standardized dosing. Liquid extracts absorb quickly and suit those who have trouble swallowing pills. Decoction (boiling the raw herbs) is the most potent and customizable form but less practical for daily modern use. Where it comes from: Gui Pi Wan originated with physician Yan Yonghe in the Song dynasty (c. 1253 CE), initially as an 8-herb formula for worry-induced heart and spleen weakness. The formula was expanded to its current 12-herb version by Ming dynasty physician Xue Ji (c. 1529 CE), who added Dong Quai and Polygala to address blood deficiency and emotional disturbances. It has been in continuous use for over 700 years across China, Japan (as Kihi-to in Kampo), Korea, and Taiwan, making it one of the longest-clinically-validated herbal formulas in existence.

Helps

What does Gui Pi Wan help with? Fatigue and low energy: Gui Pi Wan directly targets the kind of fatigue that comes from overwork, stress, or chronic under-nourishment — not just physical tiredness but the mental exhaustion that comes with it. The Astragalus and Codonopsis in the formula help the body generate more energy from food, while Dong Quai supports healthy blood levels, which carry oxygen to muscles and the brain. Anxiety and worry: This formula is especially suited to anxiety that comes with overthinking, excessive worry, or mental work — the type that leaves you feeling both wired and depleted. Herbs like Sour Jujube Seed, Polygala, and Longan Fruit calm the nervous system and support the heart, helping quiet a racing mind without sedation. Sleep problems and insomnia: Gui Pi Wan is particularly effective for difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to an overactive mind or emotional stress. Sour Jujube Seed has some of the strongest human clinical evidence among any TCM herb for improving sleep quality, and it forms the backbone of this formula's sleep-supporting action. Irregular or light periods: When periods are late, very light, or absent due to exhaustion, overwork, or poor nutrition, Gui Pi Wan helps by rebuilding the blood and energy reserves the body needs to maintain a healthy menstrual cycle. Dong Quai is a key herb here, supporting blood flow and hormonal balance. Brain fog and poor concentration: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, or that 'foggy' feeling after prolonged stress or inadequate rest respond well to this formula. By rebuilding blood and energy that feed the brain, and calming the nervous system, Gui Pi Wan helps restore mental clarity over several weeks. Heart palpitations: Palpitations linked to anxiety, stress, or anemia — rather than a structural heart problem — are a classic indication for Gui Pi Wan in TCM practice. The formula nourishes the heart and steadies the nervous system, reducing that unsettled fluttery feeling. Poor appetite and weak digestion: Chronic stress and overwork often suppress appetite and digestive function. Gui Pi Wan uses Atractylodes, Poria, and Aucklandia to gently restore digestive tone, improve appetite, and ensure nutrients are properly absorbed — which in turn supports energy and blood building. Postpartum recovery: Childbirth places enormous demands on blood and energy reserves. Gui Pi Wan is traditionally used to help new mothers recover strength, support milk production, stabilize mood, and address postnatal fatigue and anxiety, all of which are tied to blood and energy depletion. Anemia (blood deficiency): In clinical settings, particularly in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, Gui Pi Wan is often used alongside or as an alternative to iron supplementation for mild to moderate anemia, especially in women. Dong Quai and the formula's overall blood-building action help raise red blood cell counts over time. Night sweats and restless sleep: Night sweats accompanied by fatigue and poor sleep — particularly in women — often respond to Gui Pi Wan because the formula addresses the blood and fluid deficiency that underlies these symptoms, rather than just suppressing them.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
