What is Goshajinkigan? Goshajinkigan (GJG) is a traditional ten-herb Kampo formula that has been used in Japan and China for centuries to support what East Asian medicine calls 'kidney yang' — the body's warming, activating energy tied to aging, nerve health, and lower body vitality. It is one of the most widely prescribed Kampo formulas in Japanese clinical practice today, available as a standardized extract through licensed Kampo practitioners and in some integrative oncology settings. The formula builds on the classical Chinese prescription Jinkigan (Shen Qi Wan) with the addition of Achyranthes and Plantago to strengthen its action on the lower limbs and urinary tract. How does Goshajinkigan work? The formula works through several overlapping pathways. Its herbs collectively support healthy nerve signaling, reduce oxidative stress in nerve tissue, and promote circulation to the extremities — which explains why it's used for both neuropathy and cold, weak legs. Rehmannia and Cornus provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support, while processed aconite is thought to improve peripheral blood flow and reduce pain signaling. Plantago seed and Alisma support fluid metabolism, which is why the formula is effective for urinary discomfort as well. What forms does Goshajinkigan come in? In Japan, GJG is most commonly prescribed as a standardized hot-water extract granule (Tsumura formulation, TJ-107), which is the form used in most clinical trials. Tablet and capsule forms are available in integrative health settings. Traditional decoction involves simmering the raw herbs — this is closer to the classical preparation but less convenient. Granules dissolve in hot water and are taken two to three times daily. Where it comes from: The formula originates from the Song Dynasty Chinese medical text 'Jisheng Fang' (1253 CE), where it was described as a treatment for kidney deficiency with lower body weakness, urinary difficulty, and painful joints. It was adopted into Kampo practice in Japan and has been in continuous clinical use for over 750 years . Today it is one of approximately 150 standardized Kampo formulas reimbursed under Japan's national health insurance system.

Helps

What does Goshajinkigan help with? Chemotherapy-induced nerve pain (CIPN): This is the most clinically studied use of GJG. When chemotherapy drugs like oxaliplatin damage the nerves in the hands and feet, GJG has been shown to reduce tingling, numbness, and pain — especially when started early in treatment. It appears to protect nerve tissue from oxidative damage caused by these drugs. Diabetic neuropathy and nerve pain: GJG has been studied for the nerve pain, tingling, and numbness that develop in people with long-term diabetes. The formula's combination of antioxidant and circulation-supporting herbs may help protect and repair the small nerve fibers most affected by high blood sugar over time. Overactive bladder and frequent urination: GJG is one of the most commonly prescribed Kampo formulas for urinary urgency, frequent nighttime urination, and difficulty fully emptying the bladder — particularly in older adults. Clinical trials have found improvements in urinary frequency and quality of life comparable to some conventional medications. Cold, weak, or numb legs (lower body circulation): In Kampo tradition, GJG is specifically directed at the lower half of the body — the legs, lower back, and feet. It is used when people feel persistent coldness, weakness, or heaviness in their legs, especially in older adults. The formula's warming herbs support circulation to the extremities. Urinary incontinence in older adults: Several Japanese clinical trials have looked at GJG for urge urinary incontinence — the sudden, hard-to-control need to urinate. Results suggest it can meaningfully reduce accidental leakage episodes and is generally well tolerated in the elderly population who often take multiple medications. Oxaliplatin neuropathy (cancer treatment side effect): Oxaliplatin, used in colorectal cancer treatment, causes particularly severe nerve pain in the hands and feet. GJG has been specifically trialed in colorectal cancer patients receiving this drug, with results showing reduced severity of nerve symptoms without interfering with chemotherapy effectiveness. Age-related lower body weakness and fatigue: In Kampo medicine, the kidney system governs aging, bone strength, and lower body vitality. GJG is a go-to formula for older adults experiencing a cluster of symptoms — lower back fatigue, leg weakness, reduced energy — that traditional medicine links to declining kidney vitality. Lower back pain and kidney deficiency (Kampo): GJG is traditionally indicated for lower back pain that is accompanied by fatigue, cold extremities, and urinary changes — the classic signs of what Kampo calls kidney yang deficiency. It addresses the root pattern rather than just the pain symptom.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
