What is PEMF Therapy? PEMF therapy uses a device to deliver short bursts of electromagnetic energy to targeted areas of the body. The pulses pass harmlessly through tissue and are thought to influence cellular activity at the level of ion channels, mitochondria, and cell membranes. It has been FDA-cleared for specific uses like bone fracture healing and surgical fusion since the 1970s, and interest in broader applications has grown steadily since. How does PEMF Therapy work? The electromagnetic pulses create tiny electrical currents within tissue that mimic the body's own bioelectric signals. This appears to stimulate cellular energy production, encourage the movement of calcium and other ions across cell membranes, reduce inflammatory signaling, and support the natural repair processes in bone and soft tissue. Different frequencies and intensities are used for different goals — lower frequencies tend to be calming and are used for sleep and pain, while higher frequencies are used for bone stimulation. What forms does PEMF Therapy come in? FDA-cleared clinical devices (like EBI Bone Healing System) are prescribed for non-union fractures and spinal fusion. Consumer-grade full-body mats are popular for general wellness, pain, and sleep. Localized coil or pad applicators are used for targeted joint or muscle treatment. Wearable units are emerging for on-the-go use. Device quality and output parameters vary significantly across brands — this matters for outcomes. Where it comes from: The bioelectric basis of bone healing was discovered in the 1950s–60s by researchers including Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. Andrew Bassett. The first FDA clearance for PEMF bone healing came in 1979. NASA research in the 1990s–2000s explored PEMF for maintaining astronaut bone and muscle mass in zero gravity, and those findings helped broaden interest in wellness applications.

Helps

What does PEMF Therapy help with? Bone fractures and slow healing: This is PEMF's strongest and most established use. The therapy appears to stimulate the cells responsible for building new bone, speeding up healing in fractures that are stubbornly slow to mend. It has been FDA-cleared for non-union fractures (breaks that haven't healed on their own) since the late 1970s. Osteoarthritis and joint pain: PEMF is one of the better-studied non-drug options for osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. It seems to calm the inflammatory environment inside the joint and may slow cartilage breakdown over time. People often notice meaningful reductions in pain and stiffness with several weeks of regular sessions. Chronic back and neck pain: Several trials have tested PEMF for back and neck pain with encouraging results — most people using it report less pain and better function compared to a sham device. It's often used alongside other treatments rather than as a standalone fix. Fibromyalgia: Small trials suggest PEMF can help reduce widespread pain and fatigue in people with fibromyalgia, a condition where standard treatments often fall short. The therapy may work by calming overactive pain signals in the nervous system. Sleep problems and insomnia: Low-frequency PEMF applied before bed has been shown in small studies to improve sleep quality, reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, and increase restorative deep sleep. The calming effect on the nervous system is thought to be the mechanism. Depression and low mood: Some trials — including research using a specific form called Low-Field Magnetic Stimulation (LFMS) — have shown short-term mood improvements in people with depression, including bipolar depression. The evidence here is promising but still early, and PEMF is not a replacement for standard depression treatment. Osteoporosis: PEMF has been studied as a way to maintain or improve bone density in people with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Results suggest it may slow bone loss and support bone-building activity, though it works best as part of a broader bone health plan. Post-surgical recovery: PEMF is sometimes used after orthopedic surgery to speed tissue repair, reduce swelling, and get people back to function faster. Some hospitals use FDA-cleared devices post-spinal fusion for this reason. Sports injuries and muscle recovery: Athletes use PEMF to recover faster from training and minor injuries. There's reasonable evidence it can reduce muscle soreness and support tissue repair after intense exercise, though most of the research in this area is still in early stages. Peripheral neuropathy: Preliminary research suggests PEMF may reduce the burning, tingling, and pain of peripheral neuropathy — particularly in people with diabetic nerve damage. The evidence is limited but promising enough to be worth exploring alongside medical care.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A therapy that uses brief pulses of low-level electromagnetic energy delivered through a coil or mat to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation.
  • Main uses: Most widely used for bone healing, joint pain, and recovery from injury — with growing use for sleep, mood, and inflammation.
  • Best for: Bone fracture healing, Osteoarthritis and joint pain, Chronic back and neck pain
  • Active ingredients: Pulsed electromagnetic field energy, Low-frequency magnetic pulses (typically 1–100 Hz), Variable magnetic flux density (microtesla to millitesla range)
  • Forms: Full-body mat (home use), Localized pad or coil applicator, Clinical-grade device (hospital/clinic), Wearable PEMF device, FDA-cleared bone healing unit
  • Time to effect: Bone healing: 3–6 months; Pain relief: 2–8 weeks of consistent use; Sleep improvements: 2–4 weeks
  • Side effects: Generally very well tolerated — mild tingling or temporary soreness at the treatment site is the most commonly reported issue.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
