What is Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong)? Eucommia bark (Du Zhong) comes from the Eucommia ulmoides tree, native to central China and the only member of its plant family still living today — a true botanical relic. The inner bark has been used in Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years as a premier kidney-liver tonic, especially valued for strengthening the skeletal system and supporting healthy blood pressure. It contains a unique rubbery latex that stretches into white threads when the bark is pulled apart — a signature quality used traditionally to confirm authenticity. How does Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) work? Eucommia bark works through several complementary pathways: its antioxidant compounds (especially chlorogenic acid) help relax blood vessel walls, supporting healthy circulation and blood pressure. Its iridoid glycosides and lignans appear to support bone-forming cells and reduce cartilage breakdown, which aligns with its traditional use for joint and bone strength. It also has mild adaptogenic properties that help regulate stress responses and hormonal balance, particularly around the kidney-adrenal axis as understood in Chinese medicine. What forms does Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) come in? Standardized extracts (often standardized to chlorogenic acid content) offer the most consistent dosing and are preferred for clinical use. Traditional decoction of the dried bark remains common in Chinese herbal practice. Capsules and tablets are the most convenient form for daily use. Alcohol-based tinctures are available but less common in Western markets. Where it comes from: Du Zhong is listed in the Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica), one of the foundational texts of Chinese medicine compiled roughly 2,000 years ago, where it was classified as a superior-grade herb. It has been used continuously since then for low back pain, knee weakness, fatigue, and maintaining health in middle and older age. Modern research, particularly from China and Japan, has validated many of its traditional applications, especially for blood pressure regulation and musculoskeletal support.

Helps

What does Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) help with? High blood pressure: Eucommia bark is one of the most studied Chinese herbs for blood pressure. Its antioxidant compounds help relax blood vessel walls and reduce vascular resistance, leading to measurable drops in both systolic and diastolic readings in people with mild to moderate hypertension. Low back and knee pain: In Chinese medicine, low back and knee weakness are classic signs of kidney deficiency, and Du Zhong is the go-to herb for this pattern. Modern research supports its ability to reduce inflammation in joints and protect cartilage, making it useful for chronic low back pain and knee discomfort, including in people with early osteoarthritis. Bone loss and osteoporosis: Eucommia bark contains compounds that support bone-forming cells while slowing the activity of cells that break bone down. It has shown particular promise in postmenopausal women where estrogen loss accelerates bone thinning, and its lignan compounds may play an estrogen-like protective role. Joint stiffness and arthritis: Regular use of eucommia bark appears to reduce markers of joint inflammation and slow cartilage degradation. It works alongside its bone-protective effects to give a broader musculoskeletal benefit, which is why it has long been used for stiff, achy joints in older adults. Fatigue and low energy: Eucommia is traditionally classified as a qi and yang tonic, helping restore vitality and reduce the kind of deep tiredness that comes with chronic stress or aging. Users often report improved stamina and a general sense of resilience after several weeks of consistent use. Sexual health and libido (men): As a kidney yang tonic in Chinese medicine, Du Zhong is traditionally used to support male sexual vitality, including libido and erectile function. Some research suggests it may support testosterone balance, though human clinical data in this area is still limited. Blood sugar regulation: Polysaccharides in eucommia bark have shown blood sugar-stabilizing effects in early research, reducing post-meal glucose spikes and improving insulin sensitivity. This is promising for people with prediabetes or metabolic syndrome, though more clinical trial data is needed. Sleep quality: Some users and traditional practitioners report that eucommia bark, especially when taken in the evening, supports deeper and more restful sleep — likely through its calming effect on the nervous system and its regulation of stress hormones via the adrenal-kidney axis. Menopausal bone health (women): Eucommia's lignan compounds, particularly pinoresinol diglucoside, may act similarly to weak plant estrogens, helping maintain bone density during and after menopause when natural estrogen drops sharply. It is often combined with other herbs in traditional formulas for this purpose.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
