Burning feet that keep me awake at night
You get into bed, and your feet start to burn. The heat can feel deep in the soles, or like a hot wire on the skin. Some people also feel pins and needles, a sharp sting, or sudden zaps.
Nights often feel worse than days. The sheets press on your skin, and there is nothing else to focus on. So a signal you ignored all day now feels loud.
Burning feet at night often come from stressed or damaged nerves in the feet. High blood sugar over many years is one common cause of this. Other causes include low B vitamin levels, thyroid problems, some drugs, heavy drinking, and poor blood flow.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you have a cut, blister, or sore on your foot, or if parts of your foot feel numb to touch. Go the same day for skin that is red, puffy, warm, or foul-smelling, for black or grey skin, or for a fever. Get urgent care if one foot turns pale, cold, and very painful all at once, and ask for a blood sugar test if you have not had one.
Below is a list of remedies that people use for burning feet from nerve damage. Each one has a grade that shows how strong the research is, not a promise of results. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you try any of them, since some clash with other drugs.
