Yucca root is the woody root and trunk of the Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera), a desert plant. It is sold as a capsule, powder or tea and is taken most often for sore, stiff joints. This page covers the single herb on its own, not blends.
The honest verdict: the human evidence is very thin. Almost all of what we know comes from laboratory dishes, farm animals and a small, poorly controlled study from the 1970s.
Yucca has a recognised place in herbal practice, and it moved into Western and European herbal use in the twentieth century. Traditional use tells you that people have relied on a plant for a long time. It is not proof that the plant works, and that difference applies to everything on this page.
Nobody has shown in people how yucca root works, so what follows is an idea, not a proven path.
Yucca is rich in saponins, natural soap-like compounds that foam in water. In test tubes and in animals, some yucca saponins calm down markers of inflammation (swelling and irritation in body tissue).
Other lab work suggests yucca saponins may bind to waste chemicals in the gut and change the mix of gut bacteria. Whether any of this happens at the doses people actually swallow has not been tested properly.
Yucca root is sold in a few simple forms.
Capsules and tablets of dried, powdered root are the most common, usually 400 to 500 mg each. Liquid extracts and tinctures (alcohol-based drops) are also sold. Loose dried root can be simmered into a strong tea, called a decoction.
A purified Yucca schidigera extract is used in animal feed and as a food-grade foaming agent, but that is a different product from a herbal supplement.
Yucca grows in the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Indigenous peoples of that region used the pounded root as a soap and washing agent, and used parts of the plant in traditional medicine.
Western and European herbalists picked yucca up much later, mostly in the twentieth century, when it became popular as a joint remedy in North American and European supplement shops.
Its standing is real but recent and narrow, not a centuries-old European staple.
Stop taking yucca root and speak to your doctor if you get a rash, swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing. Get help straight away if breathing is hard.
Also call your doctor if stomach pain or diarrhoea lasts more than two days, if you feel very weak or dizzy, or if your heartbeat feels odd or fluttery.
See your doctor rather than self-treating if a joint is hot, red, swollen or getting worse, or if pain wakes you at night.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
