What is Yellow Dock? Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) is a perennial herb native to Europe and Western Asia that has naturalized across North America, where it was also adopted by many Indigenous peoples as a healing plant. The root is the primary medicinal part, harvested in autumn when active compounds are most concentrated. It has a long history in Western herbalism, Eclectic medicine, and traditional Indigenous plant use for cleansing, digestion, and skin conditions. How does Yellow Dock work? Yellow Dock works in two main ways. Its anthraquinone compounds gently stimulate the bowel, encouraging movement and relieving constipation. Its mild bitter compounds prompt bile production in the liver, which supports fat digestion and helps the body clear metabolic waste more efficiently. It also contains a modest amount of plant-based iron and compounds that may improve how well the gut absorbs iron from other sources. What forms does Yellow Dock come in? Tinctures are the most popular form in Western herbalism because they are easy to dose and absorb quickly. Capsules of dried or powdered root offer convenience and consistent dosing. Root tea made from simmered dried root is traditional and effective. Liquid extracts are concentrated and best used in small amounts under guidance. Where it comes from: Yellow Dock has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years . Ancient Greek and Roman physicians referenced related dock species for digestive complaints. In 19th-century America, Eclectic physicians widely prescribed it as a liver and blood tonic. Many Native American nations — including the Cherokee and Iroquois — used it for skin problems, stomach ailments, and as a food source. It remains one of the most commonly used herbs in Western and Native American herbal traditions.

Helps

What does Yellow Dock help with? Constipation and sluggish bowels: Yellow Dock's anthraquinone compounds act as a gentle stimulant laxative, encouraging the large intestine to move waste along. Unlike harsh laxatives, traditional use and herbalist guidance suggest it works gradually and is less likely to cause cramping when used at moderate doses. Iron deficiency and anemia support: Yellow Dock root contains plant-based iron and bitter compounds that are thought to improve bile flow, which in turn helps the gut absorb iron more efficiently. Herbalists have long combined it with other iron-rich herbs for people with mild iron deficiency, particularly women with heavy periods. Sluggish liver and bile flow: The bitter constituents in Yellow Dock stimulate the liver to produce more bile, which is essential for breaking down fats and clearing toxins from the body. This makes it a go-to herb in Western herbalism for people who feel sluggish, bloated after fatty meals, or dealing with mild liver congestion. Skin conditions (acne, eczema, psoriasis): Many herbalists consider Yellow Dock a 'blood-cleansing' herb, believing that supporting liver and bowel detoxification reduces the toxic load that can show up in the skin. Traditional use for chronic skin conditions like eczema and acne is well-documented, though modern clinical trials specifically for this use are limited. Digestive bloating and discomfort: By stimulating bile flow and supporting regular bowel movements, Yellow Dock helps reduce the gas and bloating that often come from sluggish digestion. It is particularly helpful when bloating is linked to poor fat digestion or infrequent elimination. Lymphatic congestion: Yellow Dock has traditionally been classified as a lymphatic herb in Western herbal medicine, used to support the movement of lymph fluid and reduce swollen glands. This use is rooted in traditional practice rather than clinical trials, but remains a common application among experienced herbalists. Mild inflammation of the gut: The tannins in Yellow Dock provide a mild astringent and anti-inflammatory effect in the gut lining. This makes it useful for calming mild intestinal irritation, though people with active inflammatory bowel conditions should use caution and consult a practitioner. Heavy menstrual bleeding (iron replenishment): Women who lose significant iron through heavy periods have traditionally used Yellow Dock as part of an herbal strategy to replenish iron stores and support energy levels. Its combined iron content and absorption-supportive bitters make it a practical and gentle option alongside dietary changes. Poor appetite and indigestion: As a classic bitter herb, Yellow Dock stimulates digestive secretions including stomach acid and bile when taken before meals. This can help wake up a sluggish digestive system, improve appetite, and ease the heaviness after eating.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
