What is Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)? Forskolin comes from the roots of Coleus forskohlii, a tropical plant native to India, Nepal, and parts of Southeast Asia. It has been used in Ayurvedic healing for thousands of years to support the heart, lungs, and digestion. Today it is most recognized as a weight management supplement and natural testosterone support for men. How does Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii) work? Forskolin works by directly activating an enzyme in your cells called adenylate cyclase, which raises levels of a chemical messenger called cAMP (cyclic AMP). Higher cAMP signals your body to break down stored fat, produce more testosterone, relax smooth muscle in blood vessels and airways, and regulate inflammation. It essentially acts like a 'master switch' that amplifies many of your body's natural regulatory signals. What forms does Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii) come in? Standardized root extract capsules ( 10% or 20% forskolin) are the most common and practical form for general supplementation. Pharmaceutical-grade eye drops containing 1% forskolin are used clinically in some countries for glaucoma management. Raw powder and bulk extracts are available but harder to dose accurately without standardization labeling. Where it comes from: Coleus forskohlii has been documented in Ayurvedic texts for over 3,000 years under the names 'makandi' and 'pashanabhedi,' used to treat heart disease, respiratory conditions, and digestive complaints. Modern scientific interest began in the 1970s when researchers isolated forskolin and identified its powerful cAMP-activating mechanism, sparking decades of pharmaceutical and supplement research.

Helps

What does Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii) help with? Fat loss and body composition: Forskolin activates a cellular pathway that encourages your body to release and burn stored fat for energy. Human trials in overweight men have shown meaningful reductions in body fat percentage and preservation of lean muscle mass, making it more of a body recomposition tool than a pure weight-loss supplement. Low testosterone (men): By raising cAMP levels in the testes, forskolin appears to stimulate the cells responsible for producing testosterone. Clinical research in overweight men found significantly higher free and total testosterone after 12 weeks of supplementation — a meaningful finding for men looking for natural hormonal support. Eye pressure and glaucoma support: Forskolin reduces the production of fluid inside the eye, which helps lower the intraocular pressure that drives glaucoma damage. Eye drop formulations have been tested in clinical settings and shown to produce measurable pressure reductions, offering a potential complementary approach alongside conventional glaucoma treatment. High blood pressure: Forskolin relaxes the smooth muscle walls of blood vessels, which widens them and allows blood to flow with less resistance. This vasodilating effect has been observed in both research settings and traditional use, making it a historically valued herb for cardiovascular support. Asthma and breathing difficulties: By relaxing the smooth muscle in the airways, forskolin can help open up the bronchial tubes and make breathing easier. Small clinical studies have found it useful as a complementary approach for reducing asthma attack frequency, and it has been explored in inhaled forms for acute use. Thyroid function support: Forskolin stimulates thyroid hormone production by activating the same cAMP pathway that thyroid-stimulating hormone uses naturally. This makes it a popular addition to thyroid support formulas, though clinical evidence in humans with diagnosed thyroid conditions is limited and it should not replace medical treatment. Lean muscle preservation: In men specifically, forskolin's combined effects on fat burning and testosterone elevation appear to support the maintenance of lean muscle mass even during calorie restriction. This sets it apart from many weight-loss supplements that cause muscle loss alongside fat loss. Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis): Forskolin has anti-inflammatory properties and has historically been applied topically in Ayurvedic practice for skin conditions involving inflammation and irritation. Its cAMP-raising mechanism may help calm overactive immune responses in the skin, though modern clinical trial data for topical use remains limited.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
