What is Naringenin? Naringenin is a flavanone — a type of plant polyphenol — most concentrated in grapefruit, oranges, and tomato skin. It is the active form of naringin, a bitter compound that gets converted to naringenin by gut bacteria after you eat citrus. As a supplement, it is often extracted and standardized for consistent dosing. How does Naringenin work? Naringenin works by reducing oxidative stress and calming inflammatory signals in tissues like the liver, blood vessels, and fat cells. It also helps the body become more responsive to insulin by activating pathways that improve how cells take up glucose. Additionally, it influences how the liver processes fats and cholesterol, making it useful for metabolic health. What forms does Naringenin come in? Supplements come as standardized capsules or powders, usually delivering 250–500 mg per serving. Whole grapefruit provides the compound alongside fiber and other synergistic flavonoids. Liquid extracts are also available for those who prefer them. Bioavailability is enhanced when taken with a small amount of healthy fat. Where it comes from: Citrus fruits have been used medicinally across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian traditions for thousands of years — often for digestive complaints, fever, and liver support. Naringenin as an isolated compound became a focus of modern research in the late 20th century as scientists began identifying why citrus-rich diets correlate with lower rates of metabolic disease.

Helps

What does Naringenin help with? Fatty liver (NAFLD): Naringenin helps the liver process and clear excess fat more efficiently, reducing the fat buildup that defines non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It also calms liver inflammation, which is what makes the condition progress into more serious damage over time. High cholesterol and triglycerides: Naringenin nudges the liver to produce less LDL cholesterol and helps clear triglycerides from the blood more quickly. Clinical studies in people with elevated lipids show meaningful reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides after supplementation. Blood sugar and insulin resistance: This compound helps cells respond better to insulin, so glucose gets absorbed more efficiently rather than lingering in the bloodstream. It also appears to slow the absorption of sugar from meals, smoothing out blood sugar spikes after eating. Inflammation and oxidative stress: Naringenin is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes damaging free radicals and dials down inflammatory signals throughout the body. This makes it broadly useful for conditions driven by chronic low-grade inflammation. High blood pressure: Naringenin supports relaxation of blood vessel walls, which helps reduce blood pressure naturally. It appears to work partly by improving how the inner lining of blood vessels functions, which is critical for healthy circulation. Weight management and metabolic syndrome: Naringenin can help reduce fat accumulation — especially around the liver and abdomen — and improves several markers of metabolic syndrome at once, including blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. It is not a dramatic weight-loss compound on its own but works well as part of a metabolic support plan. Gut health and microbiome balance: Naringenin acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria while reducing populations of harmful microbes. A healthier gut microbiome then amplifies naringenin's own benefits, since gut bacteria are responsible for converting naringin into absorbable naringenin. Skin aging and UV damage: Applied topically or taken internally, naringenin helps protect skin cells from UV-related oxidative damage and reduces inflammatory skin responses. It also supports collagen stability, which is relevant to skin firmness and aging. Thyroid function support: Some research suggests naringenin may help regulate thyroid hormone conversion and reduce thyroid inflammation, though this area is still emerging. It is occasionally included in formulas designed to support healthy thyroid function.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
