What is Ellagic Acid? Ellagic acid is a natural polyphenol found abundantly in pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, and walnuts. When you eat these foods, your gut bacteria convert ellagic acid and its precursors (called ellagitannins) into active compounds called urolithins, which may be responsible for many of the health benefits attributed to this compound. It has been studied across traditional medicine systems worldwide and is now gaining attention in modern nutritional science. How does Ellagic Acid work? Ellagic acid works primarily as an antioxidant, neutralizing damaging free radicals before they can harm your cells. It also dials down inflammatory signaling pathways in the body, which may help with a wide range of chronic conditions. Its gut-derived metabolites, particularly urolithin A, have attracted research interest for their ability to support cellular cleanup and muscle health. What forms does Ellagic Acid come in? Most commonly found as pomegranate extract standardized to a percentage of ellagic acid, or as standalone ellagic acid capsules. Whole food sources like pomegranate juice are also popular. Urolithin A supplements have emerged as a direct way to bypass the gut conversion step entirely. Where it comes from: Pomegranate, one of the richest sources of ellagitannins, has been used medicinally for thousands of years across Persian, Ayurvedic, and Mediterranean traditions — revered for its connection to longevity, fertility, and healing. Ellagic acid itself was identified as a chemical compound in the 19th century, and modern research into its biological effects began in earnest in the 1980s and 1990s.

Helps

What does Ellagic Acid help with? Skin aging and UV damage: Ellagic acid helps protect skin cells from UV-induced damage and may reduce the breakdown of collagen that leads to wrinkles and sagging. Studies in humans and topical applications suggest it can brighten skin tone and slow visible aging when used consistently. Chronic inflammation: This compound helps quiet key inflammatory signals in the body, which may ease the low-grade, chronic inflammation linked to many modern health problems. It works through several pathways at once, making it a broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory nutrient. High blood pressure: Pomegranate juice — rich in ellagitannins — has been shown in clinical trials to meaningfully lower systolic blood pressure. Ellagic acid appears to help relax blood vessels and improve arterial flexibility, contributing to these cardiovascular benefits. Blood sugar and metabolic issues: Ellagic acid may help slow the absorption of sugar in the gut and improve how cells respond to insulin. This makes it a useful tool for people managing pre-diabetes or trying to keep blood sugar steady throughout the day. Gut health: Ellagitannins act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria and helping create a healthier microbial environment. The by-products of this process — urolithins — may further support the gut lining and overall digestive function. Oxidative stress and cellular damage: Ellagic acid is one of the more potent plant antioxidants, able to neutralize multiple types of free radicals before they damage DNA, proteins, or cell membranes. Regular intake from food or supplements can measurably reduce markers of oxidative stress in the body. Muscle recovery and aging: Urolithin A, produced from ellagic acid in the gut, has shown in clinical research the ability to support mitochondrial health in muscle cells — essentially helping your muscles maintain their energy production as you age. This may translate to better endurance and less muscle fatigue. Liver health: Early clinical and observational evidence suggests ellagic acid may support healthy liver enzyme levels and protect liver cells from oxidative and inflammatory damage, particularly in people with fatty liver risk factors. Weight management support: Some research suggests ellagic acid may modestly influence fat metabolism and reduce fat cell formation, potentially making it a helpful addition to a weight management plan alongside diet and exercise. Prostate health (men): Pomegranate extract rich in ellagitannins has been studied in men with elevated PSA levels, with some trials showing a slowing of PSA doubling time. This suggests a possible role in supporting prostate health, though more research is ongoing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
