Home

What is [RETIRED] Flotation REST Therapy? Flotation REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) involves lying in a pod or tank filled with about 10 inches of body-temperature water saturated with roughly 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. The salt makes you completely buoyant — no effort required to float — while the darkness and silence cut off almost all sensory input from the outside world. Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes . How does [RETIRED] Flotation REST Therapy work? With no gravity pulling on your joints and muscles, and almost no sensory signals coming in, your nervous system gets an unusually deep rest. Your brain shifts toward slower, more relaxed brainwave patterns, stress hormones like cortisol drop, and muscles that are normally bracing against gravity finally let go. The magnesium in the water may also absorb through the skin in small amounts, offering an additional calming effect. What forms does [RETIRED] Flotation REST Therapy come in? Most people access float therapy at commercial float centers, which offer private pods or open tanks by the hour. Pod styles range from fully enclosed cabins to open-top pools — both work equally well. Home float tanks are available for purchase but represent a significant investment. Session length is typically 60 or 90 minutes , with 60 minutes being a good starting point for first-timers. Where it comes from: Float tanks were developed in the 1950s by neuroscientist John C. Lilly at the National Institute of Mental Health, originally to study what happens to consciousness when all external input is removed. By the 1970s and 1980s, researcher Thomas H. Fine began the first systematic clinical studies on REST for stress and pain. Commercial float centers gained mainstream popularity through the 2010s, and academic research has picked up considerably since 2014.

Helps

What does [RETIRED] Flotation REST Therapy help with? Chronic stress and burnout: Floating gives your stress-response system a genuine break. Cortisol levels tend to drop during and after sessions, and most people describe feeling a calm that lingers well beyond the tank itself — sometimes for days. Anxiety and racing thoughts: With no outside noise or light competing for attention, the mind naturally slows down. Research from Justin Feinstein's lab found meaningful reductions in anxiety — including in people with clinical anxiety disorders — after repeated float sessions. Fibromyalgia and chronic muscle pain: Removing gravity from the equation lets muscles and joints decompress in a way that very few therapies can replicate. People with fibromyalgia in particular report significant pain relief and reduced muscle stiffness after a course of float sessions. Sleep problems and insomnia: The deep relaxation achieved during floating carries over into the night. Studies have shown improvements in both sleep quality and the ease of falling asleep, likely because floating settles the nervous system into a state that promotes good sleep. High blood pressure: Regular float sessions have been shown to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with mild to moderate hypertension, likely through a combination of deep relaxation and reduced stress hormone activity. Post-workout muscle recovery: Athletes use floating to speed recovery between hard training sessions. The combination of zero gravity, muscle relaxation, and potential magnesium absorption helps reduce soreness and tension after intense exercise. PTSD symptoms: Early clinical work by Feinstein and colleagues suggests floating may reduce hyperarousal and intrusive symptom severity in PTSD patients, possibly because the safe, non-threatening sensory environment helps the nervous system practice being calm. Depression (mild to moderate): Several studies have found improvements in mood and depressive symptoms following float therapy, with effects that can last days to weeks after a session. Floating appears to support the same mood-regulating systems targeted by relaxation-based therapies. Tension headaches and migraines: Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back is a major driver of tension headaches. Floating relieves this tension effectively, and many people report significant headache reduction with regular sessions. Sensory overload and burnout (autism / HSP): Paradoxically, deliberately reducing sensory input in a controlled, safe environment can help people who are prone to sensory overload reset their baseline. Some individuals on the autism spectrum have reported reduced anxiety and improved wellbeing with regular float sessions.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
