What is Flotation REST (Tank)? Flotation REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) involves lying in a lightproof, soundproof pod or room filled with about 10 inches of water saturated with roughly 800–1,000 lbs of Epsom salt, making your body float on the surface without any effort. The water is kept at skin temperature (around 93.5°F / 34.2°C) so you gradually lose the sense of where your body ends and the water begins. The result is a state of profound physical and mental stillness that's genuinely difficult to achieve through other means. How does Flotation REST (Tank) work? By removing almost all sensory signals — gravity, light, sound, and temperature contrast — your nervous system shifts from its usual high-alert state into deep parasympathetic rest. Your brain naturally drifts into theta brainwaves (the same state experienced in the moments just before sleep), your stress hormones drop, and your muscles release tension they've been holding without you even knowing. At the same time, the high magnesium content of the water may be absorbed through the skin, supporting muscle relaxation and nervous system calm. What forms does Flotation REST (Tank) come in? Most people experience flotation at a dedicated float center in a pod (enclosed, egg-shaped) or a float room (a walk-in cabin with more space). Home tanks are available for purchase and are popular with serious practitioners. Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes , with some centers offering 2-hour or longer options. Open float pools exist but are less common and provide less complete sensory isolation. Where it comes from: Flotation REST was developed in the 1950s by American neuroscientist John C. Lilly, who was studying the effects of sensory deprivation on consciousness. By the 1970s–80s, researchers including Peter Suedfeld and Roderick Borrie began investigating its therapeutic applications, and clinical research has expanded significantly since the 2010s with formal trials on anxiety, pain, and athletic performance.

Helps

What does Flotation REST (Tank) help with? Chronic stress and burnout: Floating gives your nervous system a rare and genuine break from the constant stream of sensory input it processes all day. Stress hormones like cortisol drop noticeably during and after a session, and people typically feel a calm that carries over for hours or even days after floating. Anxiety and generalized worry: Clinical trials have shown meaningful reductions in anxiety after flotation sessions, including in people with diagnosed anxiety disorders. The sensory-quiet environment helps your brain step out of the loop of anxious thought, and many people describe it as the first time their mind has truly gone quiet in years. Chronic pain and fibromyalgia: Removing the pull of gravity takes enormous pressure off your joints, spine, and muscles, which is especially helpful for people living with constant pain. Studies on fibromyalgia patients have found real reductions in pain, stiffness, and anxiety after a series of float sessions. Sleep problems and insomnia: Flotation naturally guides your brain into theta wave states — the relaxed, dreamy state between waking and sleep. Many regular floaters report falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply on nights after a session. Muscle tension and soreness: The combination of weightlessness and magnesium-rich water helps muscles unwind from the kind of chronic holding patterns that build up from stress and physical training. Athletes use flotation to recover faster from intense workouts and competition. Athletic recovery and performance: Flotation accelerates post-exercise recovery by reducing muscle soreness and inflammation, improving sleep quality, and helping athletes enter a focused mental state. Several professional sports teams have incorporated it into recovery protocols. PTSD and trauma-related stress: Emerging clinical research suggests flotation may help reduce PTSD symptom severity, likely by giving the hyperactivated nervous system extended periods of genuine safety and calm. It's being studied as a complementary approach alongside standard trauma therapies. High blood pressure: Regular flotation sessions have been associated with temporary reductions in blood pressure and heart rate, consistent with its strong parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) effects. It's not a replacement for medical treatment, but may be a useful addition for people managing stress-related hypertension. Depression (mild to moderate): Some clinical research has found that flotation can reduce symptoms of depression alongside anxiety, possibly through its effects on stress hormones, mood-regulating brain chemistry, and the deep restoration it provides. Most evidence is for mild-to-moderate depression, not severe. Mindfulness and mental clarity: With nowhere to scroll, nothing to listen to, and no one to respond to, flotation creates an unusual natural opportunity for present-moment awareness. Many people use it to process thoughts, gain perspective, or simply experience mental clarity they struggle to find in everyday life.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
