What is Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata)? Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata) is a perennial herb native to the rocky, high-altitude slopes of the Himalayas, widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Its thick, fleshy leaves and rhizomes (underground stems) are the primary medicinal parts used. The name itself — 'pashan' meaning stone and 'bhed' meaning to break — reflects its longstanding role as a go-to remedy for kidney and bladder stones. How does Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata) work? Pashanbhed works through several pathways: it helps relax smooth muscle in the ureter (the tube connecting kidneys to the bladder), which can ease stone passage; it reduces calcium crystal formation in urine, which is a key step in kidney stone development; and its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties help flush the urinary tract and soothe irritation. Bergenin, its primary active compound, also shows antioxidant effects that may protect kidney tissue from damage. What forms does Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata) come in? Traditional Ayurvedic use favors a decoction made from the dried rhizome, boiled in water. Modern supplements come in standardized capsule or tablet form, often extracted for bergenin content. Powder mixed with warm water or honey is also common in home use across South Asian households. Where it comes from: Pashanbhed appears in classical Ayurvedic texts including the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, where it is classified under herbs for urinary and kidney disorders. It has been used continuously in Ayurvedic, Unani, and Siddha medicine for over 2,000 years , particularly across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Its long, unbroken record as a urinary herb in multiple traditional medicine systems gives it strong historical credibility.

Helps

What does Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata) help with? Kidney stones: This is where Pashanbhed has its strongest reputation. It appears to reduce calcium oxalate crystal buildup in the kidneys and relax the muscles of the ureter, which helps smaller stones pass more easily and with less pain. Many people use it as both a preventive measure and to help clear stones that have already formed. Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Arbutin in Pashanbhed acts as a natural urinary antiseptic — once it reaches the urinary tract, it becomes active against common bacteria like E. coli that cause UTIs. Its diuretic effect also increases urine flow, helping to flush out bacteria more quickly. Painful or difficult urination: Whether from stones, inflammation, or infection, Pashanbhed has a soothing, anti-inflammatory effect on the urinary tract lining. It helps ease the burning or pressure that comes with difficult urination, often providing noticeable relief within the first few weeks. Bladder stones: Similar to kidney stones, Pashanbhed's ability to reduce crystal formation and promote urine flow makes it useful for preventing and helping pass small bladder stones. It's frequently combined with other Ayurvedic diuretic herbs in formulas targeting the lower urinary tract. Kidney inflammation: Bergenin and quercetin in Pashanbhed help calm inflammation in kidney tissue, which may be useful after a kidney infection or in cases of mild chronic kidney irritation. It is not a replacement for medical treatment in serious kidney disease, but may support recovery and comfort. High uric acid / gout support: By increasing urine output and supporting the kidneys' ability to filter waste, Pashanbhed may help lower elevated uric acid levels over time. Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners have used it alongside dietary changes for people prone to gout. Urinary retention: Pashanbhed's mild diuretic and smooth muscle-relaxing effects may help ease urinary retention — that uncomfortable feeling of not being able to empty the bladder fully. It is traditionally used as a supportive remedy, not a standalone treatment for structural causes. Digestive inflammation: Tannins and bergenin provide astringent and anti-inflammatory effects in the gut, which traditional practitioners have used to calm diarrhea and intestinal inflammation. This is a secondary use compared to its urinary applications but has a reasonable track record in Ayurvedic practice. High blood sugar (early support): Some early research suggests Pashanbhed may help improve insulin sensitivity and modestly lower blood sugar, likely through bergenin's antioxidant effects on pancreatic tissue. This is a developing area and should be seen as supportive, not a primary diabetes treatment. Wound healing (topical): The powdered rhizome has been applied topically in traditional practice to wounds and skin irritations, where its astringent tannins help tighten tissue and reduce minor bleeding. Modern evidence for this use is limited but the traditional application is well-documented.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
