What is Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri)? Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) is a fast-growing tropical weed found across India, South America, and Southeast Asia that has earned genuine respect in both Ayurvedic medicine and Brazilian folk healing. Its Sanskrit name means 'earth gooseberry,' reflecting its tiny, gooseberry-like fruits. It's one of the most studied Phyllanthus species, with research spanning liver disease, kidney stones, and metabolic health. How does Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) work? The herb works through several complementary pathways: its tannins and lignans help shield liver cells from oxidative damage and may slow viral replication in hepatitis B; its compounds relax the smooth muscle of the ureter, making it easier for small kidney stones to pass; and its antioxidant polyphenols reduce inflammation throughout the urinary and digestive systems. What forms does Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) come in? Standardized capsules or tablets (often standardized to phyllanthin content) are the most consistent option for therapeutic use. Teas made from the dried herb are traditional and gentle. Liquid extracts offer flexible dosing. When buying, look for products that specify the species (P. niruri or P. amarus) since quality varies widely across Phyllanthus genus products. Where it comes from: In Ayurveda, bhumyamalaki has been used for millennia as a liver tonic ('yakrit uttejak') and a treatment for jaundice, urinary complaints, and digestive disorders. In the Brazilian Amazon it is called 'chanca piedra' (stone breaker) and has been brewed as a tea for kidney and gallstones for generations. Modern clinical interest accelerated in the 1980s when early research suggested antiviral activity against hepatitis B.

Helps

What does Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) help with? Kidney stones: Bhumyamalaki appears to relax the ureter — the tube connecting kidney to bladder — which helps small stones pass more quickly and with less pain. It may also reduce the formation of calcium oxalate crystals, the building block of the most common type of kidney stone, when taken regularly. Liver health and protection: The herb's lignans and tannins act like a shield for liver cells, helping reduce damage from toxins, alcohol, and certain infections. Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners have relied on it for jaundice and liver swelling for centuries, and modern research supports a measurable liver-protective effect. Hepatitis B (chronic): Several clinical studies have looked at whether Phyllanthus can help clear hepatitis B surface antigen from the blood, with mixed but promising results — particularly for people who have chronic (long-term) infection. It should be used as a complement to conventional care, not a replacement. Urinary tract infections: Bhumyamalaki has traditionally been used to soothe the urinary tract and reduce burning or frequent urination. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties may help calm a mild UTI or support recovery alongside conventional treatment. High blood pressure: Some clinical research in people with hypertension suggests that Phyllanthus may produce a modest blood pressure-lowering effect, possibly by relaxing blood vessels. This is an emerging use and should not replace prescribed medications without medical guidance. Blood sugar management (type 2 diabetes support): Preliminary clinical research suggests Phyllanthus may help lower fasting blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. The mechanism likely involves slowing glucose absorption and reducing oxidative stress in pancreatic cells. Gallstones: Traditional use extends to gallstones, where the herb is thought to prevent bile from becoming too concentrated — the main driver of stone formation. Human trial evidence for this specific use is limited, but the traditional rationale is consistent with its known effects on biliary and digestive secretions. Oxidative stress and inflammation: Rich in polyphenols like ellagic acid, quercetin, and rutin, bhumyamalaki is a potent antioxidant that helps neutralize harmful free radicals throughout the body. This broad anti-inflammatory effect underlies many of its other benefits.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
