What is Mustard (Bach)? Mustard is one of 38 Bach Flower Remedies created by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and homeopath who believed that emotional imbalances underlie physical illness. It is prepared by floating freshly picked mustard blossoms on spring water in sunlight, capturing what Bach called the plant's energetic or vibrational essence. The resulting preparation is diluted many thousands of times, so no measurable plant chemistry remains — its action is considered energetic rather than biochemical. How does Mustard (Bach) work? Within the Bach system, Mustard is chosen for people experiencing deep, heavy sadness or depression that descends like a cloud with no identifiable reason — it may lift just as suddenly as it arrived. The remedy is believed to bring light and clarity back to the emotional state, helping restore inner joy and stability. From a conventional scientific standpoint, its mechanism is not established; any observed benefits may involve the ritual of self-care, mindful intention, or placebo response, all of which carry genuine therapeutic value. What forms does Mustard (Bach) come in? The classic form is a liquid stock concentrate taken as 2–4 drops under the tongue or stirred into water. Dosage bottles are further diluted preparations. Sprays, creams, and lozenges are commercially available combination formats. Rescue Remedy (a blend of five Bach remedies) does not include Mustard but is the most widely recognized Bach product globally. Where it comes from: Dr. Edward Bach introduced the Mustard remedy in the early 1930s, identifying it as the specific remedy for what he described as melancholy that descends without warning and lifts without reason — a state he saw as distinct from grief or fear-based sadness. His system drew on his earlier work in bacteriology and homeopathy before he left conventional medicine to pursue what he felt was a simpler, gentler approach to healing through nature.

Helps

What does Mustard (Bach) help with? Unexplained sadness or depression: Mustard is the classic Bach remedy for sadness or gloom that arrives out of nowhere and has no identifiable cause. It is specifically chosen when someone feels overtaken by a dark, heavy mood that they cannot explain or reason their way out of. Sudden emotional heaviness: Some people experience waves of deep heaviness or despair that descend suddenly and feel all-encompassing. Mustard is traditionally selected for exactly this pattern — the cloud-like quality of a mood that wasn't there and then suddenly is. Low mood with no obvious trigger: When someone feels persistently low but cannot point to any life event or stressor as the cause, Bach practitioners consider Mustard the appropriate remedy. It is thought to help restore a sense of inner light and emotional steadiness. Feeling emotionally disconnected: People in the Mustard state often describe feeling cut off from joy, from other people, or from life itself — even when things are going reasonably well. The remedy is used to help reconnect with warmth and positive feeling. Loss of joy or interest: When the things that usually bring pleasure no longer seem to register emotionally, Mustard may be suggested as a supportive remedy alongside other care. This overlaps with anhedonia, one of the hallmark features of clinical depression. Mood swings that appear without cause: Mustard is also chosen when dark moods cycle unpredictably, appearing and disappearing without an obvious pattern. Bach saw this as distinct from situational sadness and assigned Mustard specifically to it. Mild to moderate depressive states: Some users incorporate Bach Flower Remedies as a complementary tool alongside conventional mental health support for mild to moderate depression. Mustard is typically the first remedy considered when the dominant feature is heavy, causeless sadness. Gloom and inner darkness: The language Bach used to describe the Mustard state — inner darkness, a black cloud, a deep gloom — resonates with many people who struggle to articulate their emotional experience to others. The remedy is valued as much for providing a language for the state as for any direct effect.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
