Long Dan Xie Gan Tang is one of the most well-known classical formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine, first recorded in the Li Dongyuan's 'Lan Shi Mi Cang' (Secrets from the Orchid Chamber) during the Jin-Yuan dynasty period and later popularized in the Qing dynasty. However, the dietary pattern that best supports its goals — clearing damp-heat, reducing inflammation, and supporting liver and urinary health — emphasizes: (1) Bitter greens like dandelion, arugula, and radicchio, which support liver bile flow and mild detoxification; (2) Cooling foods such as cucumber, watermelon, celery, and mung beans, which help reduce systemic heat and support urinary flushing in TCM dietary therapy; (3) Fermented foods like plain yogurt and kefir to support gut and vaginal microbiome health during and after any infection treatment; (4) Cranberry juice (unsweetened) for UTI prevention through its anti-adhesion effect on urinary bacteria; (5) Garlic and turmeric for their broad anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial support.
