What is Liver Extract? Liver extract is a concentrated supplement derived from animal liver — most commonly beef (bovine) or pork (porcine) — that has been dried, hydrolyzed, or processed into a more convenient form. It captures nearly everything present in whole liver: a remarkably dense package of iron, B vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, amino acids, and trace minerals. Liver has been called 'nature's multivitamin' for good reason — gram for gram, it is one of the most nutrient-complete foods in existence. How does Liver Extract work? The heme iron in liver extract is absorbed significantly more efficiently than plant-based (non-heme) iron, making it particularly effective for correcting or preventing iron-deficiency anemia. The concentrated B12 and folate support red blood cell production and neurological function, while preformed vitamin A (retinol) supports immune health, skin, and vision. Choline and the amino acid profile provide additional support for liver function and cellular repair. What forms does Liver Extract come in? Desiccated (dried) whole liver capsules are the most common modern form and retain the full nutrient profile. Hydrolyzed liver extracts have been pre-broken down for potentially faster absorption. Historical injectable liver extracts (Campothecin-era medicine) were used clinically to treat pernicious anemia before isolated B12 was available. Liquid extracts are also available but less common. Where it comes from: Liver extract has a notable place in medical history. In the 1920s, Minot and Murphy demonstrated that feeding large amounts of raw liver could reverse pernicious anemia — a finding that earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934. Liver injections became a standard medical treatment for B12-deficiency anemia for decades before isolated cyanocobalamin became available. Organ meats including liver were also central to many traditional diets worldwide — from Indigenous Arctic cultures to traditional European and Asian cuisines — long before nutritional science could explain why.

Helps

What does Liver Extract help with? Iron-deficiency anemia: Liver extract delivers highly absorbable heme iron alongside the cofactors (copper, folate, B12) your body needs to actually build healthy red blood cells. This makes it one of the most complete natural options for correcting iron-deficiency anemia, especially in people who struggle to tolerate conventional iron supplements. Fatigue and low energy: Persistent tiredness is often linked to low iron, B12, or folate — all of which are densely packed into liver extract. By restoring these key nutrients, many people notice a genuine lift in their energy levels within a few weeks of consistent use. Vitamin B12 deficiency: Liver is one of the richest natural sources of B12 in its most bioavailable forms. For those with dietary gaps — particularly people eating limited animal foods — liver extract can effectively restore B12 levels and relieve symptoms like tingling, weakness, and brain fog. Folate deficiency: Natural food folate in liver extract supports DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and is especially important during pregnancy. Unlike synthetic folic acid, food-form folate from liver does not require genetic conversion to be used by the body. Poor athletic endurance and recovery: Liver extract has a long history of use in athletic communities as a natural performance support tool. The combination of heme iron (improving oxygen delivery), B12, and a full amino acid profile may support endurance capacity and faster recovery after training. Weak immune function: Preformed vitamin A (retinol) in liver extract is critical for maintaining the integrity of immune barriers and supporting immune cell function. Zinc and copper, also present in significant amounts, further support a healthy immune response. Poor skin, hair, and nail health: The combination of vitamin A, zinc, copper, and amino acids in liver extract supports collagen production, keratin synthesis, and overall skin cell turnover — making it a useful nutritional tool for people dealing with dull skin, thinning hair, or brittle nails. Nutritional gaps from restrictive diets: People following low-carb, carnivore, or even just selective diets often miss key micronutrients. Liver extract is an efficient way to fill multiple nutritional gaps at once without needing a cabinet full of individual supplements. Liver support and detoxification: Liver extract is rich in choline and specific amino acids (like glycine and methionine) that support the liver's natural detoxification pathways and fat metabolism. Some practitioners use it as part of a broader liver-support protocol alongside other hepatoprotective herbs. Cognitive fog and focus issues: B12, folate, iron, and choline all play distinct roles in brain function and mental clarity. When deficiencies in any of these are contributing to brain fog or poor concentration, liver extract can address multiple potential causes at once.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
