What is Copper Bisglycinate? Copper bisglycinate is a chelated mineral supplement where one copper ion is bound to two glycine molecules, forming a stable ring structure that protects copper from binding to competing minerals in the gut. This chelation process, developed through modern nutritional science, dramatically improves bioavailability compared to inorganic copper forms like copper sulfate or copper oxide. It is one of the preferred forms of copper supplementation for people with digestive sensitivity or those needing reliable copper repletion. How does Copper Bisglycinate work? Copper is an essential trace mineral that serves as a cofactor for over a dozen enzymes in the body. It helps convert iron into a usable form so red blood cells can carry oxygen, supports the enzymes that build collagen and elastin in skin and connective tissue, and plays a key role in the mitochondrial enzyme complex that generates cellular energy. The glycine carrier in bisglycinate allows copper to be absorbed through amino acid transport pathways in the small intestine, bypassing competitive absorption issues common with inorganic minerals. What forms does Copper Bisglycinate come in? Copper bisglycinate is most commonly sold as capsules or tablets standardized to provide 1–3 mg of elemental copper per serving. It is also available in multi-mineral formulas and some prenatal supplements. Liquid forms exist but are less common. Capsule and tablet forms are the most studied for bioavailability. Where it comes from: Copper has been recognized as an essential human nutrient since the early 20th century, when deficiency was first linked to anemia and bone abnormalities. The bisglycinate chelate form was developed in the latter half of the 20th century by nutritional supplement researchers seeking to improve tolerability and absorption over basic copper salts. It is now a standard form used in clinical nutrition practice and premium supplement formulations.

Helps

What does Copper Bisglycinate help with? Iron-deficiency anemia (poor response to iron alone): Copper is required for the enzyme ceruloplasmin, which helps mobilize iron from storage and load it onto red blood cell precursors. Without enough copper, iron can accumulate in storage but fail to reach the bloodstream effectively, causing anemia even when iron intake looks adequate. Supplementing copper alongside iron often resolves this bottleneck. Fatigue and low energy: Copper is a core component of cytochrome c oxidase, the final enzyme in the mitochondrial energy chain that produces most of the body's ATP. Low copper means this chain runs inefficiently, leaving cells — especially muscle and brain cells — short on energy. Restoring copper levels can meaningfully improve stamina and mental clarity. Weak or brittle connective tissue: Copper activates lysyl oxidase, the enzyme responsible for cross-linking collagen and elastin fibers into strong, flexible structures in skin, joints, blood vessels, and tendons. Poor copper status leads to looser, more fragile connective tissue. Adequate copper helps maintain tissue tensile strength and elasticity throughout the body. Skin, hair, and nail health: Copper is essential for producing melanin, the pigment that colors hair and skin, and for activating the enzymes that keep skin firm and hair follicles healthy. Premature graying and thin, brittle hair are well-recognized signs of copper deficiency. Supplementing with a bioavailable form like bisglycinate can help support normal pigmentation and hair structure. Immune system support: Copper helps regulate the activity of immune cells including neutrophils and natural killer cells, and supports the production of protective antioxidant enzymes. Deficiency impairs the body's ability to fight off bacterial and viral threats. Maintaining healthy copper levels keeps the immune response appropriately responsive without becoming overactive. Bone health and density: Copper works alongside calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D to maintain bone matrix quality. The same lysyl oxidase enzyme that crosslinks connective tissue also strengthens the protein scaffolding within bone. Studies in older adults show that copper deficiency is associated with reduced bone density and higher fracture risk. Brain and nervous system support: Copper is concentrated in the brain and is required for the synthesis of neurotransmitters including dopamine, norepinephrine, and neuropeptides. It also protects nerve cells through its role in superoxide dismutase, a key antioxidant enzyme. Adequate copper status is associated with better cognitive function and mood regulation. Antioxidant defense: Copper is one of two minerals (along with zinc) that activate copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD), the body's primary intracellular antioxidant enzyme. This enzyme neutralizes the superoxide radical — one of the most damaging free radicals produced during normal metabolism — protecting cells from oxidative damage. Thyroid function support: Copper plays a supporting role in thyroid hormone metabolism and helps regulate the balance between copper and zinc, both of which influence thyroid enzyme activity. Some people with low thyroid function also show suboptimal copper levels, and correcting this deficiency can support normal thyroid signaling.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
