What is Kigen-to? Kigen-to is a five-herb Japanese Kampo formula equivalent to the classical Chinese formula Gui Zhi Tang, one of the oldest and most foundational prescriptions in East Asian medicine. It combines cinnamon twig, white peony root, licorice root, ginger, and jujube date into a balanced formula designed to gently open the body's defenses and restore equilibrium. It has been standardized in Japan and is available as a pharmaceutical-grade granule preparation prescribed by licensed physicians. How does Kigen-to work? The formula works by supporting the body's natural immune and circulatory response at the surface level — helping ease muscle tension, mild fever, and sweating associated with early illness. Cinnamon twig warms circulation and promotes a gentle sweat to clear pathogens; white peony root softens and relaxes muscles and blood vessels; licorice and jujube harmonize the formula and support energy; and ginger warms the digestive system to aid absorption and reduce nausea. What forms does Kigen-to come in? In Japan, Kigen-to is most commonly dispensed as TJ-45 granules (Tsumura brand), a standardized pharmaceutical preparation. Traditional practitioners may also prepare it as a raw herb decoction boiled in water. Granules are dissolved in hot water and consumed as a tea-like drink, which is the most clinically studied and standardized form. Where it comes from: Gui Zhi Tang (the Chinese equivalent of Kigen-to) first appeared in the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders), written by Zhang Zhongjing around 200 CE — one of the most influential medical texts in East Asian history. When Chinese medicine traveled to Japan and evolved into Kampo, this formula remained a cornerstone prescription. It is referenced in more classical case studies and commentaries than nearly any other formula in the tradition, valued for its elegant simplicity and wide applicability.

Helps

What does Kigen-to help with? Common cold (early stage): Kigen-to is a go-to Kampo formula for colds caught early — ideally within the first day or two of symptoms. It helps the body open its defenses, encourage a mild sweat, and clear the pathogen before it takes deeper hold. Flu symptoms and mild fever: The formula is traditionally used for fevers accompanied by chills, sweating, and body aches — especially when the person feels more cold than hot. It supports the body's natural fever response without suppressing it outright. Muscle aches and stiffness: White peony root and cinnamon together help ease muscle tension and achiness, particularly the neck, shoulder, and back stiffness that often comes with colds or general tension. It's a gentle muscle relaxant as part of a whole-body formula. Sweating with chills: Kigen-to is specifically indicated in Kampo for the pattern of 'spontaneous sweating with aversion to wind or cold' — meaning people who sweat easily but still feel cold. This makes it distinct from stronger warming formulas. Weak or sensitive immune system: For people who catch every cold going around or feel run-down frequently, Kigen-to can be used longer-term to gently strengthen the body's surface immunity and improve resilience. Its licorice and jujube components provide mild adaptogenic support. Nausea and digestive discomfort with illness: The ginger and jujube in the formula settle the stomach during illness, making it easier to keep the formula — and food — down when nausea accompanies a cold or flu. Post-illness fatigue and recovery: After a cold or flu, some people feel drained and slow to bounce back. Kigen-to can help restore circulation, ease lingering muscle tension, and support a return to normal energy without overstimulating a depleted system. Mild autonomic nervous system imbalance: Some Japanese clinical use extends to people with autonomic dysregulation — symptoms like temperature sensitivity, easy sweating, palpitations, or fatigue without clear cause. The formula's harmonizing herbs help regulate these subtle imbalances.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
