What is Maoto (Kampo)? Maoto is a four-herb Kampo formula that has been used in Japan for over a thousand years to treat the early, most intense phase of influenza and the common cold. It is one of the most studied Kampo formulas for infectious respiratory illness and is prescribed by licensed physicians in Japan as part of standard integrative care. The formula is especially suited for people experiencing strong fever, deep chills, muscle aches, and a complete absence of sweating — the classic 'battened-down' cold or flu picture. How does Maoto (Kampo) work? Maoto works by gently warming the body's surface to promote sweating, which in traditional Kampo theory helps expel the pathogen. From a modern perspective, its key herb ephedra contains alkaloids that support bronchodilation and stimulate a mild immune response, while cinnamon twig improves circulation and warmth to the extremities. The combination appears to help the body mount a more efficient fever response and may inhibit viral replication of influenza A. What forms does Maoto (Kampo) come in? In Japan, Maoto is most commonly dispensed as a standardized granule extract (Tsumura Maoto, TJ-27) that dissolves in warm water and is taken like a tea. This form is clinically tested and covered under Japan's national health insurance for influenza. Traditional decoction — simmering the raw herbs — is still used by classical practitioners. Tablets and capsules are available for convenience but are less common. Where it comes from: Maoto originates from the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders), a foundational Chinese medical text compiled by Zhang Zhongjing around 220 CE. It was adopted into Japan's Kampo medical tradition centuries later and remains one of the most prescribed Kampo formulas in Japanese hospitals today, particularly during flu season. Japan's rigorous standardization of Kampo granule extracts has made Maoto one of the best-studied traditional formulas in the world.

Helps

What does Maoto (Kampo) help with? Influenza (flu): Maoto is best known for its ability to shorten how long flu symptoms last, particularly when taken within the first 48 hours of onset. Clinical studies conducted in Japan have found it performs comparably to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) in reducing fever duration in children and adults with influenza A. Fever with chills and body aches: This is Maoto's classic target — a high fever with no sweating, strong chills, and deep muscle aching throughout the body. The formula's warming herbs work together to break the cold-locked fever pattern by encouraging the body to sweat and release heat naturally. Common cold (early stage, no sweating): When a cold comes on hard and fast with the same chills-and-aches picture but no sweating, Maoto is traditionally considered the first-line Kampo choice. It helps the body push through the most acute phase more quickly. Muscle pain and stiffness with illness: The deep body aches and neck-and-back stiffness that accompany a bad flu respond well to Maoto's combination of ephedra and cinnamon twig, which help warm and loosen tight, cold-contracted muscles during acute illness. Nasal congestion and runny nose: Ephedra's natural decongestant properties help open nasal passages and reduce the watery, clear runny nose typical of the early cold and flu stage. Cough and bronchial tightness: Apricot kernel in the formula acts as a mild natural cough suppressant and helps relax tightness in the airways, making breathing more comfortable during illness. Children's flu and fever: Japanese pediatric studies have specifically evaluated Maoto in children with influenza, finding it an effective and generally safe option for shortening fever duration in kids who cannot take or whose parents prefer to avoid antiviral drugs. Cold-type asthma flare: Historically used in Kampo to address cold-triggered wheezing and chest tightness, Maoto's bronchodilating properties from ephedra may help ease respiratory constriction during a cold-weather or infection-triggered asthma episode — though this use should always be supervised by a practitioner.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
