Eucalyptus globulus

Recognised but minor in homeopathic tradition; no human trials support the diluted remedy, and homeopathy overall performs no better than placebo.

Home

What is Eucalyptus globulus? Eucalyptus globulus in homeopathy is a very dilute preparation made from the leaves of the blue gum tree. It is a single drug (one source plant, not a mixture). People reach for it for coughs, blocked noses, chesty colds and thick catarrh (mucus). The remedy is made by serial dilution. The plant extract is diluted over and over, with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, one of the commonest strengths, the dilution has gone so far that essentially none of the original plant remains. Human trials do not show homeopathic preparations performing better than placebo (a dummy treatment). Traditional use is not proof of effect anywhere in this document; it tells you what people have long done, not what has been shown to work. One important safety point sits outside the 30C question. Low-potency products such as the mother tincture, 1X or 3X still contain real eucalyptus material, and eucalyptus oil is genuinely poisonous if swallowed. How does Eucalyptus globulus work? Honestly: there is no accepted explanation of how a 30C preparation could act on the body. At that dilution there is no measurable plant material left to act on tissue. Homeopathy's own idea is the "like cures like" principle. The claim is that a substance which causes symptoms in a well person can, once diluted and shaken, ease similar symptoms in a sick person. This idea has not been demonstrated in controlled human trials. Low-potency forms are a different matter. Mother tincture and very low dilutions still carry eucalyptus oil, which has real effects on the airways and the gut and real risks at higher doses. Any improvement you feel with a 30C remedy is best explained by placebo response, the natural course of a cold, and the attention that comes with treating yourself. What forms does Eucalyptus globulus come in? The usual forms are small sugar pellets, tablets and liquid drops. Common potencies include 6C, 12C and 30C. The higher the number, the more the material has been diluted. X potencies (1X, 3X, 6X) are less dilute and can still contain plant material. Mother tincture (marked TM or Ø) is an alcohol extract of the leaf and is not a high dilution at all. Treat it as a herbal product, with all the cautions that eucalyptus oil carries. Liquid forms usually contain alcohol, which matters if you avoid alcohol or are giving a remedy to a child. Where it comes from: Eucalyptus globulus is native to Australia and Tasmania, where Aboriginal peoples used the leaves for wounds and congestion. Colonists spread it worldwide in the 1800s for its oil. Homeopaths adopted it in the later 19th century. It appears in materia medicas (reference books of remedies) for catarrh, fevers and urinary complaints, though it has always been a minor remedy rather than a first-rank one. The plant itself is far better known in Western herbal medicine and in household steam inhalation than in homeopathy.

Helps

What does Eucalyptus globulus help with? Blocked nose and sinus congestion: This is the most common reason people pick the remedy. Homeopathic texts match it to a stuffed nose with thick, stringy mucus. No trial has tested homeopathic Eucalyptus globulus for congestion, so treat this as tradition only. Chesty cough with thick mucus: Homeopathic sources suggest it for a loose, rattling cough. Inhaled eucalyptus oil is a separate thing with its own small body of research; a 30C pellet contains no oil and cannot be assumed to act the same way. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than three weeks. Common cold: Colds clear on their own in about a week to ten days. That natural recovery is the main reason any cold remedy seems to work. There is no trial evidence that this remedy shortens a cold. Sore throat with catarrh: Traditional homeopathic use covers a raw throat with post-nasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat). Evidence is limited to homeopathic case reports and prescribing texts, not controlled trials. Hay fever with a runny nose: Some homeopaths prescribe it for streaming nose and irritated eyes in allergy season. Trials of homeopathy for hay fever have been small and mixed, and none tested this remedy specifically. Do not drop a prescribed antihistamine or steroid nasal spray for it. Mild bladder irritation (traditional homeopathic use only): Older homeopathic books list it for burning on passing urine. There is no human trial support at all. Burning urine with fever or back pain needs a doctor, not a home remedy.

Where it comes from:

Eucalyptus globulus is native to Australia and Tasmania, where Aboriginal peoples used the leaves for wounds and congestion.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Eucalyptus globulus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Eucalyptus globulus?

  • Never swallow eucalyptus essential oil or use it in place of this remedy — even a teaspoon can cause seizures (fits) and coma, and small amounts have poisoned children
  • Never give eucalyptus oil, mother tincture or low-potency (1X to 3X) eucalyptus products to a baby or a child under 2 years old
  • Never put eucalyptus oil on or near the face or nose of a baby or young child
  • Do not use mother tincture or low-potency forms if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not use eucalyptus tincture or oil if you have epilepsy or any seizure (fit) disorder
  • Do not use eucalyptus tincture or oil if you have liver disease, kidney disease, inflamed bowel, or a blocked bile duct (the tube that carries bile from the liver)
  • Do not use alcohol-based liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, are in recovery from alcohol dependence, or take disulfiram or metronidazole
  • Do not use this remedy instead of your prescribed asthma inhaler, antibiotic or other treatment your doctor has given you
  • Do not use it to treat a high fever, a chest infection or breathing difficulty
  • Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to eucalyptus before

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services or your poison centre straight away if anyone swallows eucalyptus oil, or becomes drowsy, confused, sick, short of breath or has a fit after taking any eucalyptus product. Do not wait to see if it passes.

See a doctor within a day or two if you have a fever above 38C for more than three days, cough up green, brown or bloody phlegm, have chest pain, or feel breathless.

Also see a doctor if a cough lasts more than three weeks, if congestion keeps coming back, or if burning when you pass urine comes with fever or back pain. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every remedy you take, including homeopathic ones.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
