What is Kamikihito? Kamikihito is a 14-herb Kampo formula prescribed in Japan for centuries to treat what traditional medicine calls 'spleen and heart deficiency' — a state of exhaustion from too much thinking, worrying, or emotional labor. It is the Japanese adaptation of the Chinese formula Gui Pi Tang, with the addition of Gardenia fruit and Bupleurum root to address irritability and heat from stress. Today it remains one of Japan's most prescribed Kampo formulas for anxiety, forgetfulness, and disturbed sleep. How does Kamikihito work? The formula works through several pathways at once: adaptogenic herbs like ginseng and astragalus help the body handle stress without burning out, while calming herbs like jujube seed and polygala quiet mental chatter and support healthy sleep cycles. Bupleurum and gardenia help ease irritability and emotional tension, making this formula especially useful for anxiety that comes with frustration or feeling overwhelmed. Together the herbs also gently support circulation and digestive energy, so nutrients and calm signals reach the brain more reliably. What forms does Kamikihito come in? In Japan, Kamikihito is most commonly dispensed as a standardized granule extract (dissolved in warm water), regulated under Japan's National Health Insurance system. Tablet and capsule forms are available through specialty Kampo pharmacies and supplement retailers. Traditional tea decoction (boiling the raw herbs) is the classical method and remains used by practitioners who prefer individualized preparation. Where it comes from: Gui Pi Tang, the Chinese predecessor, was first recorded in the 13th-century text 'Jisheng Fang' (Formulas for Rescuing Lives) by Yan Yonghe. Japanese Kampo physicians later refined it into Kamikihito by adding Gardenia and Bupleurum to better address the irritability and emotional heat common in stress-driven presentations. For centuries it has been one of the cornerstone formulas in both Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine for 'thinking too much' at the expense of health.

Helps

What does Kamikihito help with? Anxiety and chronic worry: Kamikihito is one of the most studied Kampo formulas for anxiety, particularly the kind tied to excessive thinking, worrying, or emotional labor. The calming herbs in the formula help quiet mental restlessness without sedating you, making it suitable for daytime use. Memory loss and cognitive fog: Several herbs in this formula — especially polygala root — have been studied for their effects on memory and brain health. Clinical research in older adults has found improvements in attention and recall with regular use, making Kamikihito a traditional go-to for forgetfulness tied to stress or aging. Sleep problems from stress or overthinking: Unlike sedative sleep aids, Kamikihito addresses the root cause of stress-driven insomnia: the overactive mind that won't switch off at bedtime. Jujube seed and longan fruit are classic herbs for this pattern, helping you fall asleep more naturally and wake up feeling rested. Mental fatigue and burnout: This formula was essentially designed for burnout — the exhaustion that comes from giving too much mentally or emotionally. Adaptogenic herbs like ginseng and astragalus help restore stamina, while the other herbs in the blend address the mood and sleep disruption that accompany deep fatigue. Depression with low energy: Kamikihito has been studied for mild to moderate depression, particularly where low mood comes with physical exhaustion, poor appetite, and withdrawal. It is not a replacement for clinical treatment in severe depression but is sometimes used alongside conventional care in Japanese clinical settings. Heart palpitations from anxiety: Traditional Kampo uses this formula for the fluttery or racing heartbeat that can accompany chronic anxiety or emotional stress. The calming herbs are believed to settle both the mind and the heart's nervous response, and some users report noticeable reduction in stress-related palpitations. Poor concentration and forgetfulness: By supporting energy to the brain and calming stress-related mental noise, Kamikihito can help restore focus and working memory in people whose concentration has slipped due to worry, fatigue, or emotional strain. Mild dementia symptom support: Japanese clinical research has explored Kamikihito as a complementary support for mild cognitive impairment and early dementia, with some studies showing improvements in behavioral symptoms like agitation, anxiety, and sleep disturbance in affected patients.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
