What is Dance Movement Therapy? Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a recognized psychotherapeutic approach that uses movement and dance as the primary tool for emotional expression and healing. It works on the principle that the mind and body are deeply connected — how we move reflects how we feel, and changing how we move can genuinely change how we feel. Sessions are led by credentialed therapists and can be adapted for any age, physical ability, or clinical setting. How does Dance Movement Therapy work? DMT works by engaging the body's natural stress-response system through rhythmic movement, allowing people to process emotions and memories stored physically in the body — often things that are hard to reach through talk alone. Movement activates feel-good brain chemicals like endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine while reducing stress hormones like cortisol. The social and mirroring elements of group DMT also strengthen feelings of connection and being seen. What forms does Dance Movement Therapy come in? DMT is delivered one-on-one or in groups, in clinical settings like hospitals and mental health clinics, schools, elder care, and rehabilitation centers. Sessions typically run 45–90 minutes . Virtual DMT sessions have also shown promise, expanding access for people who cannot attend in person. Where it comes from: Marian Chace, a dancer and teacher in Washington D.C., is widely credited as the founder of clinical dance therapy in the 1940s, after observing profound emotional benefits in psychiatric patients who danced. The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was founded in 1966, formalizing training and credentialing standards. Roots of healing through communal and ritual dance, however, stretch back across every human culture in recorded history.

Helps

What does Dance Movement Therapy help with? Depression: Moving the body — especially in a rhythmic, expressive way — boosts mood-related brain chemicals and helps break the physical stillness that depression reinforces. Multiple clinical trials show meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms after structured DMT programs, including in people who haven't fully responded to talk therapy alone. Anxiety and stress: DMT helps regulate the nervous system by shifting the body out of a tense, guarded state through deliberate, guided movement and breathwork. Participants consistently report feeling calmer and more grounded after sessions, with measurable drops in self-reported anxiety. Trauma and PTSD: Trauma is often held in the body — in posture, tension, and automatic physical reactions — making body-based therapies a natural fit alongside or instead of purely verbal approaches. DMT gives people a safe, nonverbal way to process and release trauma responses that can be hard to put into words. Chronic pain: Gentle therapeutic movement can reduce the perception of pain by engaging the body's natural pain-relief systems and improving physical function. DMT also addresses the emotional and psychological weight of living with chronic pain, which often makes the physical pain feel worse. Dementia and cognitive decline: Rhythmic movement to familiar music can unlock memories and emotional responses even in people with advanced dementia. Studies show improvements in mood, agitation, and quality of life in older adults with dementia who participate in regular dance or movement therapy. Autism spectrum (children and adults): DMT supports social connection, body awareness, and emotional expression in autistic individuals by using movement as a non-demanding, non-verbal channel for interaction. Therapists use mirroring techniques to build trust and communication naturally through shared movement. Eating disorders and body image: DMT helps people reconnect with their body in a neutral, exploratory way — shifting focus from how the body looks to what the body can do and feel. This embodied approach has been used in eating disorder treatment programs to support a healthier, more compassionate relationship with one's physical self. Parkinson's disease: Structured dance programs, particularly tango, have shown real benefits for balance, gait, and quality of life in people with Parkinson's. The rhythmic cueing and partner work in dance help compensate for the movement initiation difficulties central to the disease. Loneliness and social isolation: Group DMT creates a shared, nonverbal experience that fosters genuine human connection without requiring social performance or conversation. This makes it particularly valuable for people who feel disconnected — including older adults, people with social anxiety, and those in institutional care. Low self-esteem and emotional regulation: Moving expressively in a safe, non-judgmental space builds confidence and helps people develop a more positive relationship with their body and emotions. Over time, DMT participants often report feeling more capable of recognizing and managing their emotional states.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
