This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus officinalis) is the sour, dark-red fruit of a flowering dogwood tree native to China, Japan, and Korea. It has been used in Chinese herbal medicine for over two millennia, most famously as a key ingredient in classic kidney-nourishing formulas like Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. Modern research has begun to confirm what TCM practitioners long observed — that this small fruit carries impressive biological activity, particularly around blood sugar balance and kidney protection.
Shan Zhu Yu works through several complementary pathways. Its iridoid glycosides — especially morroniside — appear to mimic or support insulin-like activity, helping cells take up glucose more efficiently. Its rich antioxidant content, including anthocyanins and gallic acid, helps reduce oxidative stress in kidney tissue and other organs. It also appears to support adrenal function and help the body manage fluid balance, which aligns with its traditional role as a kidney 'astringent' that prevents unwanted leakage of fluids and energy.
In TCM practice, Shan Zhu Yu is almost always used in decoction or as part of a multi-herb formula. Standardized extract capsules (often standardized to morroniside or total iridoids) are increasingly available and make dosing more predictable. Whole dried fruit can be brewed as a tea or added to congee and soups. For blood sugar or kidney support, standardized extracts tend to be more reliable than whole fruit teas alone.
Shan Zhu Yu has been documented in Chinese materia medica texts since at least the Han Dynasty (around 200 BCE). It features prominently in the classic formula Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, one of the most widely prescribed TCM formulas in history for kidney yin deficiency, used to address fatigue, low back weakness, frequent urination, and age-related decline. It remains among the most commonly used herbs in contemporary TCM practice across China, Japan (Kampo), and Korea.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
