What is Liu Wei Di Huang Wan? Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is one of the most famous and widely used formulas in all of Traditional Chinese Medicine, first recorded by Song Dynasty physician Qian Yi around 1119 CE in his pediatric text 'Xiao Er Yao Zheng Zhi Jue.' It combines six herbs in precise proportions — three that tonify (nourish) and three that gently drain excess — creating a beautifully balanced formula that replenishes without causing stagnation. It remains one of the best-selling herbal products in China and has been studied extensively in modern clinical research. How does Liu Wei Di Huang Wan work? From a modern perspective, the formula's six herbs work together to support adrenal and hormonal function, regulate blood sugar metabolism, protect kidney tissue, reduce inflammation, and support bone density. Rehmannia root, the lead herb, contains iridoid glycosides like catalpol that help modulate blood glucose and protect kidney cells. Cornelian cherry (Shan Zhu Yu) provides antioxidants and supports testosterone and estrogen balance. Chinese yam (Shan Yao) stabilizes blood sugar and supports gut health, while the remaining three herbs (Ze Xie, Fu Ling, Mu Dan Pi) provide gentle anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and circulatory support to keep the formula grounded and well-tolerated. What forms does Liu Wei Di Huang Wan come in? Teapills are the most traditional form and widely available — look for brands like Plum Flower or Mayway that use standardized extracts. Powdered granules dissolve in hot water and allow dose flexibility. Capsules and tablets are convenient for travel. Raw herb decoctions, prepared by a TCM practitioner, offer the most customizable and potent delivery but require more effort. Quality matters significantly — choose products that test for heavy metals and use authentic source herbs. Where it comes from: Developed over 900 years ago, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan began as a children's tonic for developmental delays and has evolved into one of the most prescribed formulas for adult aging, hormonal change, and metabolic health. It is foundational to the entire family of Rehmannia-based formulas in TCM, including Ba Wei Di Huang Wan (with added warming herbs) and Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (with added eye-support herbs). It remains on China's national list of essential medicines.

Helps

What does Liu Wei Di Huang Wan help with? Kidney health and function: This formula has been studied in people with chronic kidney disease, where it appears to slow the decline of kidney filtering function and reduce protein in the urine. The rehmannia and alisma components seem to protect kidney tissue from oxidative damage and may help reduce inflammation in kidney cells. Menopause symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats): Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is one of the most commonly used Chinese herbal formulas for menopause. Clinical trials show it can meaningfully reduce hot flash frequency, night sweats, and the emotional ups and downs of perimenopause — likely by gently supporting estrogen balance and calming the body's stress response. Blood sugar and prediabetes support: Several clinical trials in China have tested this formula in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, often alongside conventional treatment. It appears to help lower fasting blood glucose, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce HbA1c over time — making it a useful complementary tool for metabolic health. Bone density and osteoporosis prevention: Research suggests this formula supports bone-building activity and slows bone breakdown, particularly in postmenopausal women. It may work by gently supporting estrogen-related bone signaling and reducing the inflammation that accelerates bone loss with age. Low testosterone and hormonal decline (men): In men experiencing age-related hormonal decline, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan has shown promise for supporting testosterone levels and sexual vitality. The cornelian cherry component in particular appears to support the signaling chain that regulates testosterone production. Chronic fatigue and adrenal depletion: People who feel chronically run-down, burned out, or depleted — especially those with accompanying heat signs like night sweats or afternoon flushing — often respond well to this formula. It seems to help restore baseline energy by supporting the adrenal and hormonal systems that regulate stamina and stress resilience. Tinnitus and age-related hearing decline: TCM has long associated ringing in the ears with kidney deficiency, and modern research provides some support for this formula's use in tinnitus. It may help by improving circulation to the inner ear and reducing oxidative stress in auditory nerve tissue. High blood pressure: Some clinical studies have found that Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, used alongside standard care, can modestly lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. Its diuretic herbs (Ze Xie, Fu Ling) may reduce fluid volume, while its anti-inflammatory effects may support healthier blood vessel tone. Memory and cognitive aging: Early clinical research suggests this formula may support memory and cognitive function in older adults, particularly those showing signs of age-related decline. Catalpol from rehmannia has shown the ability to protect brain cells from oxidative stress and support the growth of new nerve connections. Dry eyes and vision support: A modified version of this formula (Qi Ju Di Huang Wan, with added wolfberry and chrysanthemum) is the classic TCM remedy for dry, tired, or aging eyes — but the base formula itself also supports eye health by nourishing liver and kidney energy that TCM links to visual acuity.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
