What is Rokumigan? Rokumigan is a traditional herbal formula composed of six botanicals working in harmony — it originated in classical Chinese medicine and was adopted into Japanese Kampo practice over a thousand years ago. It is considered one of the foundational 'yin-nourishing' formulas in East Asian medicine, particularly valued for supporting what practitioners call 'kidney essence,' which maps roughly onto hormonal, bone, and reproductive vitality in modern terms. The formula is widely prescribed in Japan as a regulated Kampo medicine and is among the most studied multi-herb formulas in East Asian clinical research. How does Rokumigan work? Rokumigan's six herbs work together in a balanced way — three 'tonifying' herbs (Rehmannia, Cornus, Dioscorea) build up kidney and liver reserves, while three 'draining' herbs (Alisma, Poria, Paeonia bark) gently clear stagnation and prevent the formula from becoming too heavy or congesting. Modern research suggests the formula supports insulin sensitivity, reduces oxidative stress in the kidneys, helps regulate blood sugar and lipid metabolism, and may modulate age-related hormonal decline. Its effects appear to be cumulative rather than immediate. What forms does Rokumigan come in? In Japan, Rokumigan is sold as a regulated Kampo extract granule or tablet by major pharmaceutical manufacturers (Tsumura, Kotaro, Kracie). In Chinese medicine contexts, the formula is often called Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and comes as small honey pills, capsules, or loose herb decoctions. Standardized extract granules are the most reliable form for consistent dosing. Where it comes from: The formula was first recorded in the classic Chinese pediatric text 'Xiao Er Yao Zheng Zhi Jue' (Key to Therapeutics of Children's Diseases) by physician Qian Yi in the Song Dynasty (circa 1119 CE), originally designed to address developmental deficiencies in children. It later became one of the most widely used formulas in adult medicine throughout East Asia, celebrated for treating what was described as 'kidney yin deficiency' — a pattern associated with aging, night sweats, low back aching, and declining vitality. Kampo physicians in Japan have prescribed it continuously for centuries and it remains among the top-prescribed Kampo formulas today.

Helps

What does Rokumigan help with? Age-related fatigue and low vitality: Rokumigan is traditionally prescribed as a restorative tonic for people experiencing the deep tiredness that comes with aging — the kind that isn't fixed by a good night's sleep. Modern research suggests it supports energy metabolism and reduces oxidative wear on tissues over time, with benefits that build gradually across weeks of use. Kidney and urinary health: Several clinical studies have examined Rokumigan's ability to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and protect kidney cells from damage caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. It appears to reduce protein leakage in the urine and support overall kidney filtration function. Blood sugar regulation (type 2 diabetes support): Rokumigan has been studied alongside standard diabetes care and shows promise for improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar spikes after meals. It's not a replacement for diabetes medication but may be a meaningful complement to lifestyle management. Bone density and osteoporosis risk: The formula has been investigated for its ability to support bone mineral density, particularly in postmenopausal women and older adults. It appears to gently balance bone turnover, helping slow the natural bone loss that comes with aging and hormonal changes. Hearing loss and tinnitus (age-related): Rokumigan is one of the most commonly recommended Kampo formulas for age-related hearing decline and ringing in the ears. Some clinical research from Japan supports modest improvements in hearing thresholds and tinnitus severity with long-term use. Night sweats and hot flashes (menopausal symptoms): In traditional East Asian medicine, Rokumigan is a go-to formula for what practitioners call 'yin deficiency heat' — which closely maps to the night sweats, warmth sensations, and sleep disruption of menopause. Some clinical studies from Japan and China have reported symptom relief in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Cognitive decline and memory support: Early clinical research suggests Rokumigan may support cognitive function in older adults, with some Kampo trials noting improvements in memory and attention. The formula's antioxidant and circulation-supporting effects are thought to help protect brain cells over time. Dry eyes and vision support: Rokumigan is traditionally indicated for dry, tired eyes and blurred vision associated with aging, and it remains one of the most commonly recommended Kampo remedies for dry eye syndrome in Japanese ophthalmology practices. Some small clinical studies support its use for tear production and eye comfort. Lower back pain and weakness: Low back aching and weakness in the knees and legs are classic signs that Kampo practitioners use to indicate Rokumigan. This use likely reflects the formula's support of bone density, muscle metabolism, and circulation in the lower body. Frequent urination and overactive bladder: Rokumigan is frequently prescribed in Japan for age-related urinary urgency and frequent nighttime urination, particularly in older men and postmenopausal women. Clinical trials in Japan have assessed its effects on overactive bladder symptoms with encouraging results.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
