This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Ophiopogon japonicus root — known in Chinese medicine as Mai Men Dong — is one of the most revered 'yin-nourishing' herbs in the East Asian pharmacopeia, with recorded use dating back to the Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 200 CE). The small, fleshy tubers grow along the roots of a grass-like plant native to China, Japan, and Korea, and have been used both as a standalone herb and as a central ingredient in classic formulas. Modern research has confirmed a rich chemical profile that explains many of its traditional uses, including immune modulation, blood sugar support, and cardiovascular protection.
Ophiopogon works through several overlapping pathways. Its polysaccharides support immune regulation and help improve insulin sensitivity, while its steroidal saponins (ophiopogonins) have been shown to protect heart muscle cells, reduce inflammation in the airways, and support mucus membrane hydration — which aligns with its TCM role as a 'lung moistener.' The homoisoflavonoids contribute antioxidant activity and may help regulate blood vessel tone. Taken together, these compounds support the body's ability to manage dryness, inflammation, and metabolic stress.
Traditional decoction (boiling the dried root in water) remains the most time-tested method and is still widely used in clinical TCM practice, often within combination formulas like Mai Men Dong Tang or Sheng Mai San. Standardized granule extracts offer a convenient modern equivalent. Capsule and tablet forms are widely available but may vary significantly in polysaccharide and saponin content, so look for products that specify standardization. Tinctures are less common for this herb since water extraction captures the key active compounds more effectively than alcohol.
Mai Men Dong is listed among the top-tier herbs in the Shennong Bencao Jing, China's oldest surviving herbal text, classified as a superior herb safe for long-term use. It has been a key ingredient in Sheng Mai San (Pulse-Generating Powder), a formula used in TCM and now studied in modern cardiology research for heart failure support. Its use crossed into Kampo (Japanese traditional medicine) and Korean traditional medicine, where it retained essentially the same indications: nourishing dryness, calming the heart, and supporting the stomach and lungs.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
