What is Cordyceps CS-4? Cordyceps CS-4 is a standardized, lab-fermented mycelium strain derived from Cordyceps sinensis, one of the most prized fungi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Because wild Cordyceps grows only at extreme altitudes in Tibet and costs hundreds of dollars per gram, the CS-4 strain was developed in China to make its benefits widely accessible. It has been the strain used in the majority of clinical research on Cordyceps. How does Cordyceps CS-4 work? CS-4 works mainly by boosting the body's production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the fuel your cells run on — which helps explain its well-documented effects on energy and endurance. It also supports healthy oxygen use in the lungs, helps the immune system stay balanced, and has antioxidant effects that protect cells from daily wear and tear. What forms does Cordyceps CS-4 come in? Capsules and tablets with standardized CS-4 extract are the most researched and convenient form. Powders can be mixed into smoothies or warm drinks. Liquid extracts offer faster absorption. Always look for products standardized to adenosine content (typically 0.2% or higher) or confirmed CS-4 strain designation, as generic 'Cordyceps' products vary widely in potency. Where it comes from: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cordyceps was known as 'Dong Chong Xia Cao' (winter worm, summer grass) and was considered a premier tonic for lung weakness, fatigue, and sexual vitality — reserved for royalty due to its rarity and cost. The CS-4 fermentation strain was developed by Chinese researchers in the 1980s specifically to make consistent clinical research possible and bring Cordyceps benefits to a wider population. It gained global attention when Chinese distance runners credited it with their record-breaking performances at the 1993 World Championships.

Helps

What does Cordyceps CS-4 help with? Exercise endurance and stamina: CS-4 helps your body produce energy more efficiently at the cellular level, which translates to better endurance and less fatigue during sustained exercise. Multiple studies in older adults and trained athletes have shown improvements in VO2 max (how well your body uses oxygen during effort) and time to exhaustion after several weeks of supplementation. Fatigue and low energy: One of CS-4's most consistent traditional and clinical uses is relieving persistent tiredness, especially in older people or those recovering from illness. It appears to work by supporting mitochondrial energy production and reducing oxidative stress that drains cellular energy. Respiratory health and lung function: TCM has used Cordyceps for lung weakness for centuries, and modern research supports its use for improving breathing capacity. Clinical trials in people with chronic bronchitis and COPD have shown meaningful improvements in lung function and quality of life after CS-4 supplementation. Age-related vitality decline: Several Chinese clinical trials have specifically looked at CS-4 in older adults experiencing general fatigue, weakness, and reduced quality of life — finding significant improvements across multiple wellbeing markers. It's one of the most studied natural tonics for healthy aging in the Traditional Chinese Medicine research literature. Immune system support: The beta-glucan polysaccharides in CS-4 help calibrate immune activity — supporting the body's defenses without overstimulating them. This makes it useful both for people with weakened immunity and as a general immune tonic. Kidney health and protection: TCM traditionally used Cordyceps for kidney support, and clinical research in China has shown CS-4 may help protect kidney function in people with chronic kidney disease and reduce damage from certain medications. It appears to support antioxidant defenses in kidney tissue. Blood sugar management: CS-4's polysaccharides have shown blood sugar-lowering effects in clinical studies, likely by improving insulin sensitivity and slowing carbohydrate absorption. This makes it a researched complementary option for people managing type 2 diabetes alongside conventional care. Sexual function and libido: Cordyceps has a long history in TCM as a sexual tonic for both men and women. Some clinical studies support modest improvements in libido and sexual function, possibly through effects on testosterone-related pathways and improved energy and blood flow. Heart health and circulation: Adenosine in CS-4 may support healthy heart rhythm and circulation, and some research suggests CS-4 can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. It has been studied in China as a supportive therapy for arrhythmia and chronic heart failure.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
