What is Cat's Claw (Una de Gato)? Cat's Claw is a large tropical vine native to the Amazon rainforest, named for the curved, claw-like thorns that line its stem. For at least 2,000 years , indigenous Peruvian communities — especially the Asháninka people — have prepared its inner bark as a tea or decoction to treat inflammation, infections, and digestive complaints. It reached wider global attention in the 1970s when Austrian researcher Klaus Keplinger began documenting its alkaloid content and potential therapeutic value. How does Cat's Claw (Una de Gato) work? Cat's Claw works mainly by calming an overactive immune response and reducing the chemical signals that drive chronic inflammation — think of it as a volume dial that turns down the body's inflammatory noise without completely muting its defenses. Its alkaloids appear to support white blood cell activity, while its antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. It also seems to ease gut inflammation by supporting a healthy intestinal lining. What forms does Cat's Claw (Una de Gato) come in? Standardized bark extracts in capsule or tablet form are the easiest way to get a consistent dose, and most clinical trials have used these. Liquid tinctures and teas are traditional and still widely used, though potency can vary. Some products are standardized to a specific alkaloid percentage (e.g. 3% oxindole alkaloids), which is the most reliable indicator of quality. TOA-free (tetracyclic oxindole alkaloid-free) extracts are marketed as superior, though the clinical evidence supporting that specific claim is limited. Where it comes from: The Asháninka of Peru used Cat's Claw to treat conditions ranging from arthritis and inflammation to stomach problems and infections — and considered it one of their most sacred healing plants. Spanish missionaries documented its use as far back as the 17th century. Modern scientific interest began in earnest in the 1970s–80s in Europe, leading to clinical research in Austria and Germany, and it became a popular supplement in North America and Europe by the 1990s.

Helps

What does Cat's Claw (Una de Gato) help with? Rheumatoid arthritis: Cat's Claw helps dial down the immune system's attack on its own joints, reducing the swelling, tenderness, and morning stiffness that define rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical trials have shown meaningful reductions in painful and swollen joints when taken alongside standard treatment. Osteoarthritis and joint pain: By reducing inflammation in joint tissue, Cat's Claw can ease the pain and stiffness of wear-and-tear arthritis — particularly in the knees. People in clinical studies reported less pain with activity and improved knee function after several weeks of use. Immune system support: The alkaloids in Cat's Claw help activate and regulate white blood cells, making the immune system more responsive without over-stimulating it. It has a long traditional history as an infection-fighter and is used today to support immune resilience, particularly during periods of stress or illness. Gut inflammation and leaky gut: Cat's Claw has been used traditionally — and is increasingly studied — for its ability to soothe the intestinal lining and reduce gut inflammation. It may help people with inflammatory bowel conditions by calming the immune activity in the gut wall. Knee pain: In trials focused specifically on knee osteoarthritis, Cat's Claw extract reduced pain during movement and improved daily function. The effect is thought to come from reducing inflammatory compounds in the joint fluid. Chronic inflammation: Cat's Claw blocks some of the key messengers the body uses to trigger and sustain inflammation — making it potentially useful for people with low-grade chronic inflammation that underlies many long-term health issues. Viral infections (cold and flu support): Traditional Amazonian healers used Cat's Claw for fevers and infections, and some compounds in the plant have shown antiviral activity. It is commonly used as a complementary support during colds and flu, though direct clinical evidence in humans is limited compared to its anti-inflammatory data. DNA damage repair support: Some research suggests Cat's Claw may help the body's natural DNA repair processes, possibly related to its antioxidant compounds. This is an early but interesting area of research relevant to people exposed to significant environmental stressors. Lyme disease support (adjunct): Cat's Claw is a popular complementary option among integrative practitioners supporting Lyme disease recovery, primarily for its immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical evidence for Lyme specifically is anecdotal and limited, but it is widely used in this context as a supportive, not primary, therapy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
