What is Boswellia / Shallaki? Boswellia is a gum resin harvested from the bark of the Boswellia serrata tree, native to the dry forests of India, North Africa, and the Middle East. Known as Shallaki in Ayurvedic tradition, it has been used for centuries to treat arthritis, respiratory conditions, and digestive disorders. Modern research has identified the boswellic acids — especially AKBA — as the key active compounds responsible for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects. How does Boswellia / Shallaki work? Boswellic acids work by blocking specific enzymes that drive inflammation in the body — particularly an enzyme called 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), which produces inflammatory chemicals called leukotrienes. Unlike many anti-inflammatory drugs, Boswellia does this without damaging the stomach lining or suppressing the immune system broadly. It also helps preserve the cartilage matrix in joints by reducing breakdown enzymes, which is why it's so effective for long-term joint support. What forms does Boswellia / Shallaki come in? Standardized capsule extracts are the most clinically validated form and offer reliable dosing. Topical gels and creams can provide localized joint relief. Traditional resin (burned or dissolved) is still used in Ayurvedic practice but offers less predictable potency. Newer patented extracts like Aflapin® and 5-Loxin® are designed to enhance absorption and AKBA concentration. Where it comes from: Boswellia has been central to Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years , referenced in ancient Sanskrit texts for joint diseases, lung conditions, and digestive ailments. It also holds sacred significance in many cultures — the frankincense traded along ancient routes was often Boswellia resin, prized equally as medicine and incense. Modern phytopharmacology validated its anti-inflammatory mechanisms starting in the 1970s–90s, bringing it into mainstream integrative medicine.

Helps

What does Boswellia / Shallaki help with? Osteoarthritis and joint pain: Boswellia is one of the best-studied natural options for osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. It reduces joint swelling, improves range of motion, and eases pain — often within a few weeks of daily use. Many people find it meaningfully reduces their need for over-the-counter pain relievers. Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and colitis): Boswellia helps calm the gut lining by reducing the inflammatory signals that drive flares in conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Several clinical trials have shown it can help maintain remission and reduce symptoms like cramping, loose stools, and urgency. Asthma and airway inflammation: By blocking leukotriene production — the same chemicals that trigger airway tightening in asthma — Boswellia has been shown to reduce the frequency of asthma attacks and improve lung function over time. It works best as a complementary daily supplement, not an acute rescue treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis: While the evidence here is less robust than for osteoarthritis, Boswellia's ability to reduce inflammatory markers and joint swelling makes it a useful add-on for RA management. It may help reduce morning stiffness and tenderness, particularly when used alongside conventional treatment. Back pain and spine inflammation: Chronic low back pain, especially when linked to disc-related or spinal inflammation, has shown improvement with Boswellia supplementation in clinical studies. It helps reduce the inflammatory signals that amplify pain signaling in spinal tissues. Ulcerative colitis: Clinical trials have found Boswellia extract comparable in effectiveness to some pharmaceutical options for inducing remission in ulcerative colitis. It works by soothing the inflamed gut lining and reducing the immune overactivation that drives the condition. Psoriasis and inflammatory skin conditions: Preliminary evidence and traditional use suggest Boswellia may calm systemic and skin-level inflammation associated with psoriasis. Topical preparations and oral supplementation are both being explored, though more research is needed in this area. Sports-related joint soreness: Athletes and active people have found Boswellia helpful for reducing post-exercise joint soreness and supporting faster recovery. Its anti-inflammatory action targets the same pathways activated by heavy training, without the gut-irritating effects of NSAIDs.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
