What is Borage Oil? Borage oil is extracted from the seeds of Borago officinalis, a flowering herb native to the Mediterranean region and long cultivated across Europe and the Middle East. It contains more GLA — a beneficial omega-6 fatty acid — than any other commonly available plant oil, typically 20–26% GLA by weight, compared to about 8–10% in evening primrose oil. This unusually rich GLA content is what drives most of its therapeutic uses. How does Borage Oil work? GLA is converted in the body into a compound called DGLA, which helps produce anti-inflammatory signaling molecules. This puts the brakes on the kind of chronic, low-grade inflammation behind skin flares, joint swelling, and hormonal discomfort. Unlike many omega-6 fats that feed inflammation, GLA tends to work in the opposite direction, supporting a calmer immune and inflammatory response. What forms does Borage Oil come in? Capsules are the most practical and consistent form since GLA oxidizes quickly in light and air. Look for products certified as pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) free — this label confirms the manufacturer has removed the trace plant alkaloids that can stress the liver with long-term use. Topical borage oil or creams are popular for skin conditions and do not carry the same PA concern since they are not ingested. Where it comes from: Borage has been used in European herbal medicine since at least the medieval period, prized as a mood-lifter and tonic — the old saying 'borage for courage' reflected its traditional use for calming nerves. Its seed oil only became a focused supplement after researchers in the 1980s began studying GLA's role in inflammation and skin barrier function.

Helps

What does Borage Oil help with? Eczema and dry, inflamed skin: GLA is a key building block for the skin's natural moisture barrier. People with eczema often have lower-than-normal GLA levels, and supplementing with borage oil — both orally and topically — helps restore that barrier, reducing redness, itching, and flaking. Results tend to build gradually over 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Rheumatoid arthritis: Borage oil's GLA shifts the body's inflammatory signaling in a direction that eases joint swelling and morning stiffness. Clinical studies have shown meaningful reductions in joint tenderness and swelling with daily borage oil use, and some people are able to reduce their reliance on anti-inflammatory medications over time. PMS symptoms: GLA helps regulate the hormonal and inflammatory signals that drive PMS discomfort, including mood swings, bloating, and cramps. It is thought to influence prostaglandin balance, the same pathway that many PMS medications target, but through a gentler, nutritional route. Cyclic breast pain (mastalgia): Breast pain that follows the menstrual cycle is often linked to an imbalance in fatty acid levels. GLA-rich oils like borage oil have shown genuine benefit for cyclic mastalgia in clinical trials, with many women experiencing significant pain relief after 2–3 months of supplementation. Skin aging and barrier repair: As skin ages, its ability to produce and use GLA naturally declines, which contributes to dryness, thinning, and loss of elasticity. Borage oil supplementation and topical application help restore fatty acid levels in the skin, supporting hydration and a more resilient barrier. Diabetic nerve pain (neuropathy): GLA has been studied as a nutritional support for nerve health in people with diabetes. It appears to improve blood flow to nerves and reduce the oxidative stress that damages them, which can help ease the burning or tingling sensations of peripheral neuropathy over several months. Respiratory inflammation (COPD support): Preliminary human research suggests that GLA-rich oils may help dampen the airway inflammation that drives COPD symptoms, possibly by shifting the body's inflammatory profile toward a less reactive state. This is a developing area and borage oil works best as a supportive add-on, not a standalone treatment. Hormonal skin breakouts: Hormonal acne is partly driven by inflammatory processes in the skin's sebaceous glands. GLA can help regulate sebum quality and reduce the inflammatory triggers behind breakouts, particularly the kind tied to hormonal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
