Tiny black hole in a back tooth
You looked in the mirror and spotted a small dark hole in a back tooth. It may look like a pinhole or a tiny pit. Your tongue keeps going back to it.
A dark pit like this is often decay. Germs in plaque make acid, and the acid eats through the hard outer shell. The hole can look small on top while it spreads wider underneath.
Not every dark mark is a hole. Stain from coffee or tea can look much the same. Food can also pack into the deep grooves of back teeth and look dark.
When to see someone
See a dentist soon. A hole in a tooth will not heal on its own. Call the same day if your face or gum swells, you run a fever, or the ache wakes you at night.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people have tried for tooth decay. Each one has a grade that shows how strong the evidence behind it is. Read the grades first, and keep your dental visit either way.
