Skin itches like crazy at night
You get into bed, and the itch starts. Your arms, legs, back, or shins feel like they crawl. You scratch, you drift off, and the itch wakes you again.
Dry skin is one common reason, and night tends to sharpen it. You warm up under the covers, and warm skin itches more. You also lie still, with little else to hold your mind.
Skin loses water all day. Cold air, long hot showers, strong soap, and heated rooms pull more of it out. Other things can itch at night too, such as eczema, bug bites, soap left in sheets, scabies, or a new drug.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the itch keeps you awake for weeks. Get seen for skin that is raw, weepy, crusted, or bleeding. Itch all over with no rash, yellow eyes, dark pee, weight loss, or night sweats also needs a check.
The list below shows remedies people have long used for dry skin. Each one has a grade that tells you how strong the research behind it is. A grade is not a promise, so read it with care and ask your doctor.
