Cracked heels that split and bleed
The skin around your heel goes hard, thick, and dry. Then it splits. Some cracks are shallow, but others go deep and bleed onto your socks.
Walking can sting or throb. Each step spreads your heel pad out to the side. Dry skin has little give, so the edges pull apart again.
Many things dry out heel skin. Cold air, hot showers, harsh soap, and long hours on hard floors all play a part. Open-back shoes, extra weight, and thick callus at the heel rim add more strain.
When to see someone
See a doctor if a crack looks red, warm, or puffy, or leaks pus. Get checked soon if you have diabetes, poor blood flow, or numb feet. Also go if the split bleeds a lot or has not closed in two weeks.
Below is a list of home remedies people use for dry skin. Each one carries a grade for how strong the research behind it is. A high grade means more study, not a promise for your heels.
