Can't switch off at night
You turn off the light and your mind starts up. The day replays, or tomorrow's list runs on a loop. Your body feels tired, but your head will not go quiet.
This is common when the day has no gap in it. If you go straight from work, screens, or chores into bed, your brain may still be in daytime mode. Worry and stress can keep that switch on.
Late coffee, a bright screen, a long nap, or a big evening meal can play a part. So can pain, hot flushes, or a new medicine. Some nights there is no clear reason at all.
When to see someone
See a doctor if this happens most nights for more than a month, or if you doze off during the day or at the wheel. Go sooner if you have a pounding heart, chest pain, or loud snoring with gasping at night. Get help straight away if you feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself.
Below is a list of traditional remedies people use around sleep. Each one has a grade that shows how much research has been done on it, not how well it will do for you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with medicine you already take.
